Cinnamon & Sugar Cake Recipe

This winning combination makes everything nice with sugar and spice. You’d never guess it came from a box. —Maiah Albi, Carlsbad, California
TOTAL TIME: Prep: 25 min. Bake: 20 min. + cooling YIELD:12 servings

Ingredients

  • 1 package white cake mix (regular size)
  • 1 cup 2% milk
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 6 tablespoons butter, melted
  • 3 large eggs
  • 2-1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1-1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • FROSTING:
  • 1 cup butter, softened
  • 5 cups confectioners' sugar
  • 2 tablespoons 2% milk
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon cinnamon-sugar

Directions

  • 1. In a large bowl, combine the first seven ingredients; beat on low speed for 30 seconds. Beat on medium for 2 minutes. Transfer to two greased and floured 9-in. round baking pans.
  • 2. Bake at 350° for 20-25 minutes or until a toothpick inserted near the middle comes out clean. Cool for 10 minutes before removing from pans to wire racks to cool completely.
  • 3. In a large bowl, beat butter until fluffy. Add the confectioners’ sugar, milk, cinnamon and vanilla; beat until smooth. Spread frosting between layers and over top and sides of cake. Sprinkle with cinnamon-sugar. Store in the refrigerator. Yield: 12 servings.

"Great cake! I made this for my sisters birthday party. This cake was very easy to make and turned out moist and delicious. Several people at the party requested the recipe and were surprised that it came from a box (with a little sprucing up of course). Most people liked the frosting ( I really liked it, but I did add extra milk to make it creamier), but my nephew said he preferred that cake without frosting. Keep in mind he's the type that prefers all cake without frosting. I will definitely be making this cake again."

"The cake was absolutely fabulous. Loved the taste, the smell, and the look (I think this is a beautiful looking cake). I will definitely make again. I found the frosting a bit stiff and thick. Loved the cinnamon in the frosting and will do that again, but I will play around with the butter/powdered sugar ratios to get a softer frosting. I also will not do the dusting on top again either - too crunchy."

"First off, this smelled a-maz-ing baking in the oven. It was an easy recipe to put together and was well received by everyone who tried it, both adults and kids. Folks especially liked the frosting. Most didn't realize it was a box mix base. I will make again for sure, one of the recipes that's nice to have for whatever event comes your way!"

"This is an incredible recipe! The only thing I oops'd on was putting the cinnamon-sugar mix that was to be sprinkled on the cake, into the frosting. Whoops! I shrugged my shoulders, tasted the frosting, thought it was good, and continued on. I did not sprinkle the top of the cake, but no one noticed. I think the added cinnamon-sugar made the frosting that much sweeter, but i loved it, and so did all of my friends. It's the first successful layer cake I've ever made......mine usually break in half when I remove them from the pan, lol!!!"

"My friend & I made this & OMG THIS CAKE IS LITERALLY TO DIE FOR. We didn't have cinnamon sugar on hand so we mixed 1 tsp of sugar & 1 tsp of cinnamon together to make the cinnamon sugar. We followed the recipe to the tee with no changes made at all & it turned out PERFECT!"

"I had to add three more tbsp of milk to frosting to make it spreadable and even then it was a little stiff. Very yummy the way it is, although a little sweet for my tastes. Next time I'll use a cream cheese based frosting to cut some of the sweetness."
