This is a chocolate lover's dream! It will definitely satisfy any chocolate craving you may have. I often make this cake for birthdays or other special occasions.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup shortening
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 4 ounces unsweetened chocolate, melted and cooled
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 5 eggs
  • 2-1/4 cups cake flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 2 cups (12 ounces) semisweet chocolate chips
  • FROSTING:
  • 2/3 cup butter, softened
  • 5-1/3 cups confectioners' sugar
  • 1 cup baking cocoa
  • 1 cup milk
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

Directions

  • In a large bowl, cream shortening and sugar until light and fluffy.
  • Add chocolate and vanilla; mix well. Add eggs, one at a time,
  • beating well after each addition. Combine the flour, baking soda and
  • salt; add to creamed mixture alternately with buttermilk. Fold in
  • the chocolate chips.
