Chicken Cordon Bleu Pasta Recipe

Facebook fans of my blog, Chef in Training, inspired me to make this creamy pasta casserole out of ingredients I had on hand. Success! I took the dish for another flavorful spin and added a bit of smoky bacon and toasted bread crumbs. —Nikki Barton, Providence, Utah
TOTAL TIME: Prep: 25 min. Bake: 20 min. YIELD:6 servings

Ingredients

  • 3 cups uncooked penne pasta
  • 2 cups heavy whipping cream
  • 1 package (8 ounces) cream cheese, softened and cubed
  • 1-1/2 cups (6 ounces) shredded Swiss cheese, divided
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper
  • 3 cups sliced cooked chicken breasts
  • 3/4 cup crumbled cooked bacon
  • 3/4 cup cubed fully cooked ham
  • 3 tablespoons dry bread crumbs

Directions

  • 1. Preheat oven to 350°. Cook pasta according to package directions for al dente.
  • 2. Meanwhile, in a large saucepan, heat cream and cream cheese over medium heat until smooth, stirring occasionally. Stir in 1 cup Swiss cheese, onion powder, garlic salt and pepper until blended.
  • 3. Drain pasta; stir in chicken, bacon and ham. Add sauce; toss to coat. Transfer to a greased 13x9-in. baking dish. Sprinkle with remaining cheese and the bread crumbs. Bake, uncovered, 18-22 minutes or until heated through. Yield: 6 servings.

"I LOVED this recipe. I used half and half cream and for the chicken, I'd used the cooked, sliced chicken from our supermarket salad bar, along with cooked and crumbled bacon from the salad bar. I'd used Black Forest sliced cooked ham, cut in cubes. I used Italian-style bread crumbs. This dish was SO TASTY! Thank you, Nikki Barton, for your recipe!

"My 13 and 16 year old children are always thrilled when I make this. The best thing about this recipe is that you can tailor it to what your own family likes. I add more bacon and less ham because that is what I've found they like.

I've done a few versions of the chicken. I've used rotisserie chicken, baked chicken and most recently, I put a few pieces of chicken in a crockpot and shredded it when it was done.
I love to use the little shells with this recipe. In a pinch I've used elbows which works too. A certain HIT in our home. Thanks to whomever submitted it!!!"

"I made this casserole and doubled it to feed 12 people. Nothing was left in the pans after the meal. Everyone raved about it! I was actually disappointed that there were no leftovers. I made it exactly as printed, except I used half and half instead of heavy whipping cream, and to save time I used frozen cooked grilled chicken strips, and instead of cooking bacon, I used a jar of Real Bacon Bits. No one knew the difference and it was delicious! This recipe is a keeper."

"My husband and son LOVE mac n cheese -- and this definitely takes it to the next level. Delicious. But I'm with the others: If you're watching calories, sodium, cholesterol, carbs, or any combination -- this recipe is NOT for you! But you can lighten it up, as others did -- with the lighter cream and cream cheese -- the Canadian bacon and maybe even leave the bacon out. Although the bacon was my favorite part!! Thanks for this!"

"Loved this recipe! Easy to put together: sliced 2 cooked chicken breasts and chopped up a couple of thickly sliced Black Forest ham pieces (skipped the bacon as I didn't have any) which I added to the sauce while the pasta was finishing up. The amount of sauce was good--not dry but not sloppy either. Didn't miss the bacon. A definite keeper!"

"The original recipe I am sure is great, but I lightened it up by using light cream, light cream cheese and Canadian bacon. I don't really measure the pasta so I just added what I thought would go well with the amount of sauce, also just threw in chicken, the ham and canadian bacon to what I thought looked good! My family enjoyed it and I loved the creamy sauce, I will make this again and bring it to a friend's house for them to enjoy!"

"This is a great recipe. chicken Cordon Bleu is one of my favorite ways to have chicken. This recipe brings all those great flavors to a simple, easy weeknight pasta dinner. "Although I am a vegetarian, I did taste the sauce and it was good after I added some Mrs. Lawry's No salt. I felt it needed an extra something. Rest of family really liked this recipe. Instead of onion powder, I sauted onions as my family likes onion and I don't keep onion powder on my shelf. I'd rather use the real thing. I also mixed the dry bread crumbs with melted butter. I will be making this again."

"My whole family absolutely loved this recipe. I cut it in half for my family of 3, and added a little extra cheese on top. Next time around I think I will add some more bacon on top when serving. "This recipe was very good and tasted wonderful! It's very rich - so not something I would make every day but now and then for a special occasion, it's a winner. In my opinion, it was a little dry after it baked - so next time I think I will add a small container of refrigerated Alfredo sauce to the sauce mixture. I divided the recipe in half and froze half for another meal."

"I substituted 1/2 & 1/2 for the heavy cream, added crumbled

Bleu Cheese, and decreased the amount of Swiss Cheese. The addition of Bleu Cheese added a nice tangy flavor to the dish. I also used Panko crumbs for a crunchy texture. Our family liked it very much."

"I made this ahead for my kids (7 & 3) and I. I intended to make half but cooked more than enough pasta, so the chicken was a little shy. The kids gobbled it down. I used half & half only because it was on sale so a lot cheaper, and 1/3 less fat cream cheese. I also didn't have onion power but I had onion salt and garlic powder so I just switched it up. For the bread crumbs I had a Parmesan and herb panko bread crumbs, which added a little flavor. I poured the sauce on the mixed pasta while it was in the casserole dish. All in all it was fantastic.

I had to bake it for about 40 min only because it went in cold, but came out warm. It might have heated up faster if I had put it in a 9x13 but I wanted it in a covered casserole as it was sitting in the fridge all day."
