Cheeseburger Broccoli Chowder Recipe

I invented this soup accidentally! Actually, it came about when I was new to cooking, and didn't know that "chowder" was a kind of soup—so I made mashed potatoes to go with the dish I was making. We ended up dunking our mashed potatoes into the soup as "gravy"—and it was delicious!—Karen Davies, Wanipigow, Manitoba
TOTAL TIME: Prep: 10 min. Cook: 40 min. YIELD:4 servings

Ingredients

  • 1/2 pound ground beef
  • 1/2 cup chopped onion
  • 1/4 cup chopped green pepper
  • 1 can (10-3/4 ounces) condensed cheddar cheese soup, undiluted
  • 3/4 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 cup chopped broccoli
  • 1 to 2 potatoes, peeled and diced

Directions

  • 1. In a large saucepan, cook beef with onion and green pepper until the beef is no longer pink; drain. Stir in soup, milk and Worcestershire sauce. Add broccoli and potatoes. Bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer, covered, about 30 minutes or until potatoes are tender. Yield: 4 servings.

"Pretty good. I doubled the recipe for my family, but as another reviewer mentioned, it was way too thick. I added another can of the soup along with another 3/4 cup milk. That did the trick. I did have to add salt and pepper to the finished product as well, but once seasoned, it tasted pretty yummy."

"We really enjoyed this soup. I love that it is simple and easy to prepare. I didn't feel like peeling the potatoes so just added a can of cream of potato soup and extra milk. I did add pepper, as it was a little bland. However, it will be a go-to recipe for busy weeknights."

"Made this over the weekend and it is FANTABULOUS!! I've been looking for a soup/chowder recipe that actually tastes like real food, not something from a processed block of "cheese." "I made this tonight and it was very good. I didn't have the cheese soup so I used some leftover cheese sauce from mac cheese dish. Added milk and continued on. I will not use the bell pepper next time and there will be a next time but everything else was great. I made double batch so I could freeze some. Good job."

"I made this over the weekend. It was soooo good. Used the ground turkey and did add salt and pepper and some crushed red peppers. Next time I think that I would put the potatoes in the microwave to somewhat cook them as it took more than 30 minutes as the potatoes weren't done. Also, used the extra can of cheddar cheese as it was very thick and put in additional milk in addition to doubling the recipe as it really only served 4 people."

"For those of you that have to eat gluten free like our family, you can substitute a jar of Tostitos Queso for the soup. We do this all the time in recipes that call for the canned soups. As far as salt, if you use cheese in anything you will have salt."

"This was excellant recipe and all my family really enjoyed it. I added two(2) cans of cheddar soup and milk because it was very thick with only the one(1) of each. But over all it was an excellant chowder"
