I adapted this comforting dessert from a recipe my mother-in-law gave to me. Hers fed a family with nine growing kids who were never full, so there was never any left. When I make my downsized version, there are never any leftovers either!

  • 2 cups fresh or frozen blackberries
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch
  • 1-1/2 teaspoons water
  • 1/2 teaspoon lemon juice
  • 1/2 cup quick-cooking oats
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup cold butter
  • Vanilla ice cream

Nutritional Facts

1-1/4 cup: 576 calories, 25g fat (14g saturated fat), 61mg cholesterol, 245mg sodium, 87g carbohydrate (54g sugars, 6g fiber), 6g protein.


  1. Place blackberries in a greased 1-qt. baking dish. In a small bowl, combine the sugar, cornstarch, water and lemon juice until smooth. Pour over berries. Combine the oats, flour, brown sugar and cinnamon; cut in butter until crumbly. Sprinkle over berries.
  2. Bake, uncovered, at 375° for 20-25 minutes or until filling is bubbly. Serve warm with ice cream. Yield: 2 servings.

"We harvest plenty of blackberries from our garden every summer so I am often looking for desserts that use them. I think this is my husband's favorite blackberry dessert. I usually double the recipe (using about 5 cups of blackberries) and bake it in an 8x8-inch baking pan. I plan to use the topping for other fruit crisps too."

"I didn't like the recipe. I cooked it for 10 minutes longer and the crisp did not taste done. It did not have enough sugar or corn starch in it. I wouldn't make it again without totally changing the amount of sugar, flour, cornstarch and time to cook it."

"Absolutely delicious!

I did triple the fruit, ( and all that went
with it, sugar,corn starch, water and lemon juice)
And then I quadrupled the oat flour mixture:)

"I love this recipe! I have made it several times and it is easy as well as delicious. The hardest part is picking the berries. I always use old fashioned oats because that is what I buy and it works just fine. I have multiplied the recipe and taken it to events and it is always a big hit. The ice cream is optional because the crisp is wonderful all by itself. Make it! Just do it!"

"Blackberries are my favorite summer treat. They are worth the difficult picking and cuts from thorns. I really like this because the taste of the berries is not spoiled with too much sugar. It has just the right amount."
