Reviews for Bart's Black Bean Soup
"I made 4 recipes, hoping for leftovers..NOT. I used 2 cans of beans and 2 cans of refried black beans. To that I added 2 whole cans of corn... a little more than the recipe calls for. It was very good."
"Delicious! I subbed the chicken broth for veggie broth to get a vegetarian meal. The lime juice is a great touch! So simple and easy to make. Perfect for lunches!"
"This is so fabulous & easy. I also double recipe & fix on the stovetop. PLUS, I add 1/2 lb. smoked sausage links (sliced into coins, then quartered). Modified the name to "Black Bart Bean Soup". Fans of "Christmas Story" will get it & my kids think the new name is great!"
"Is this correct amount of sodium? It seems very high. Sounds good, but I am supposed to limit sodium."
"We made this when both sides of the family came over and everyone loved it! We got requests for a copy of the recipe! (Stove top is best)"
"Great soup recipe! I made a few modifications: I added 2 cups cooked brown rice, left out the salsa, and used taco seasoning for more flavor. We loved it!"
"I made this tonight on a cold rainy night. It really hit the spot. I added a small can of mild green chilies. I cooked it on top of the stove. And topped it with corn chips. We loved it!"
"My family loves this soup. I double the recipe and make it over the stove rather than in the microwave."
"I thought this was very good and super quick and easy. I used lemon juice and cayenne pepper. Added some bread and it was delish!"
"This was delicious and super easy. Made it on the stove top and used lemon. Will make it again. Also added sour cream."
"My 16 year old daughter made this. She decided it needed more flavor and added a can of chili tomatoes. We put crushed tortilla chips , avocado slices, and sour cream on top. I thought it was delicious."
"Doubled the recipe and used homemade salsa. Great, quick dinner! Ate leftovers for lunch the rest of the week :) I will be keeping this recipe! Thanks!"
"Quick and simple. I added some leftover cubed chicken. The toppings are a must; sour cream is also good."
"Wow - we couldn't believe how good this was! It was so easy but so delicious!!"
"loved it with a grouper sandwich:-)"
"Great super easy and we had it with Shaws frozen Grouper burgers was a great combo tast went well together. we will have agein and will add to my boating meals for sail on weekend trips."
"Just made this soup and it so delicious. It seemed a bit thin and I like a thicker soup so I added a cup of salsa and a whole can of corn. I added everything all at once, brought it to a boil, then let it simmer for about 15 mintues. I also added a lit bit of chili powder and cumin and left out the pepper sauce. I think it would also be good with chicken or ground, cooked turkey and a little jalapeno added."
"This soup is delicious! I used dried beans, frozen corn, and made it on the stove rather than using the microwave, but it was still quick and easy."
"This soup is delicious! I used dried beans and cooked it on the stove rather than using the microwave, but it was still quick and easy."
"I started making this last year and it is still my new favorite! Yum..."
"This soup is delicious. It has become a regular part of my menu. Love it!"
"I doubled this reciped, but added 2 cups cooked chicken. Added some southwestern seasoning instead of hot sauce. Served it with cornbread. WONDERFUL. Should have tripled it!"
"I made this once for a vacation dinner. Even my sister, who hates spicy foods, LOVED it! I have been looking for it forever- I will make it tonight now that I found it again."
"Unbelievably good for something so simple! Was just enough for the two of us."
"Excellent quick recipe that is full of energy. I added about 1/8 cup of chopped thick sliced Black Forest bacon fried in lime juice to the recipe and it was outstanding. the bacon blended very well with the other ingredients, however I think frying the bacon in lime juice was the key in enhancing the taste of the soup!"
"I forgot to say that I used frozen corn--zapped it for a minute. Great quick recipe."
"This was very quick and easy. I think it could use some salt & pepper, but still good as it is written. I think this could have a lot of variations made to it; onions, garlic, kidney beans, navy beans, chili powder or what ever spices you like. Green chiles would probably be good to in it."
"Awesome! Definitely our new favorite! I put a whole can of corn in, rather than just the 1/2 cup, and substituted taco sauce because I didn't have any salsa on hand. The whole thing took maybe 6 minutes from start to finish! Thanks for this recipe!"
"Best quick and easy recipe ever!"
"We love this recipe and so have several people we told about it. It tastes great and is the easiest recipe I have ever made."
"Really so quick, delicious & easy! Used frozen corn. Also good with crunched up tortilla chips! Yum!"
"VERY good.. I use either a 11 oz.can of mexicorn or southwest style corn with black beans instead of the corn tho. Also a little chopped cilantro with the green onions is very tasty."
"Quick and easy and very good."
"Way good! Definitely a keeper. Doubled the recipe and added extra corn plus some cubed, cooked butternut squash. Pureed a half can of the beans and added to soup for extra thickness. Topped with sour cream, sprinkled on a small amount of shredded cheese and avocado."
"Made this over the weekend and it is going to be a new staple in our home. My husband and I both loved it, not to mention how easy it was to throw together. We did a full can of corn and doubled the salsa. Really great and the green onion was perfect on top!"
"Really good and so easy and fast to whip up. My husband and I enjoyed this quick hearty soup on a laid back fall evening. Perfect end to the day. We served it with chunks of crusty bread- very tasty!"
"Made this again Thrusday night and added a can of Rotel Tomatos to the mixed, spiced it up a little."
"Loved it! It's so easy and quick too. Would highly reccommend to friends and family."
"This soup was fabulous! I doubled the ingredients so that I could freeze the rest for a quick meal on a cold night. I loved it!"
"I used Rotel instead of salsa (1 can), frozen corn, skipped the hot pepper sauce (Rotel adds a lot of spice), and also topped with guacamole, cilantro, and a chopped chicken breast I sauted on the stove top with southwest seasonings. The soup was a huge hit at our house!"
"I saw the recipe last night, made it and we loved it. It warms up good the next day also. It is easy, quick and taste great...what else can you ask for?"
"This was a really quick and easy soup. I added half a pound of ground hamburger and we ate it with scoop tortilla chips. I also added the entire can of corn and broth so that none went to waste. My 2 year old and 6 year old both gobbled up their bowl. Definitely a recipe worth trying."
"Made this last night for my wife and I, tasty . Will double the recipe and try different variations. Will do again"
"Wow! So good. Another great ease of preparation recipe for our RV trips. I used frozen corn since I always have a bag of it on hand, but would use the can if I double the recipe (and I will ☺)"
"This has become my favorite soup! I added a small can of white chicken meat and mixed in a TBS. of sour cream. And definitely add the lime juice - it really adds a "spark" to the soup. I will be making this all winter long!"
"I've made this twice now. First time as a soup and the second time as black bean salsa, by only putting 1/2 cup Chicken Broth. It was a hit both times."
"I love this recipe. It is so quick and easy to make and has amazing flavor."
"Super easy, super delicious! Added the chicken, as was suggested by other reviewers. The lime juice is the perfect touch! Also added a dollop of sour cream to each bowl. Everyone gave a big thumbs up to this dish!"
"The whole family loved this soup! My husband said it was a keeper! I doubled the recipe & added chicken & a can of chopped green chilis to it."
"This was fab! i upped the amount of broth by half a cup and the corn to a cup... Loved it!! I added a little chopped cilantro on top along with the green onions and it was so good. Definitely a do again! Might double it next time though."
"My husband and I both loved this! I used the Target brand (Archer Farms) organic cilantro salsa and added a bit more corn. It was really filling! I agree that some shredded chicken would make the soup even more hearty and delish!"
"Made this for dinner on the stove tonight. Only variation I made (besides the stove/microwave) was substituting an avacado instead of cheese. Both my husband and I loved it. Since we made it with cornbread it was hard to tell if the soup alone was filling enough for both of us. Very possibly could have been, because while even though it doesn't make that much quantity, the beans sit kinda heavy =) Next time I may add a little extra corn and salsa just so it goes a little further without making any side dishes. Either way, my husband and I both agreed this recipe is a winner! From a cook's perspective you can't beat the ease of preparation and how common the ingredients are (any given day I should have all this in my cupboard). Thanks TOH for yet another fail proof recipe!"
"definitely one of the quickest recipes I have ever made. It's very good. I would like to add a bit of cumin or something the next time. You can't even buy fast food this fast! And this is healthier than fast food, although I bet the sodium is high."
"I made this soup last night and DOUBLED it and added 1 15oz can of Pinto Beans. This was a very enjoyable soup and I will definitely be making this again, maybe adding some sausage and rice."
"Yum yum yum! I made this on the stove top. The lime juice really makes it delicious. I'm thinking of adding shredded chicken to it next time. Delish!"
"ICouldln't believe how good this was for being so easy and quick! Delish with crushed tortilla chips added in bowls! Recipe on the scant side, need bread + salad to make this dinner for 4."
"I made this on the stovetop also. It was quick, easy and good. Paired with a sandwich, it made for a nice dinner."
"I fixed this on the stove (just as easy as using the microwave and not much more time). I'm going to have to double the recipe next time, because the "4 servings" it made weren't really enough for just me and my husband!"
"I got the magazine, saw this recipe and made it for lunch. It's delicious."
