Authentic Mexican Tortillas

This is a old family favorite given to me years ago.

TIME: Prep: 45 min. Cook: 10 min.

Ingredients:

  • 3 cups all purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 3/4 cup shortening (lard is best)
  • 3/4 cup hot water.

Directions:

Combine the dry ingredients either by hand or with a pastry blender. Work with it until it is crumbly. Add the hot water to the mixture until it looks moist. Work with the dough until it will leave the side of the bowl, adding a few more spoons of flour if needed. Just make a nice soft round shape. Now cover it with a dish towel for about 30 min and let it rest.
   Pull off 10 to 12 peices of dough and form little balls. On a floured surface roll to about 1/8 in thick.
   Place each tortilla on a med hot skillet. Cook for about 1 to 2 min on each side.
