Kitchen Face-Lift Adds Personality
An airy open look and handy up-to-date features transformed this Ohio couple's compact kitchen—a runner-up in our recent contest.
Gail and Alan Abrams, Mayfield Village, Ohio
When they decided to remodel, Gail and Alan Abrams "opened up" their dated kitchen, adding a multipurpose work island and more storage—in particular, drawers galore!
Taken with the room's practical floor plan and fresh decor, our judges named it runner-up in the Remodeled Kitchen category of our Dream Kitchens Contest. They awarded the Abramses of Mayfield Village, Ohio a $150.00 prize.
"We built our home 26 years ago and raised our two children here," recalls Gail, now grandmother of six. "In 2003, we decided to remodel."
The Abramses began by removing a peninsula and opening up the wall between the kitchen and family room.
"This allowed more room for a dining area," Alan says. "We replaced a window in the dining area with an out-swing glass French double door to our deck.
"Also, we took out the window over the old sink and put in a narrow floor-to-ceiling window, which brings in plenty of natural light near the cooktop."
