That's a First

WHEN I was a new bride, a kind neighbor supplied us with vegetables from his garden. One day, he brought me four acorn squashes. I had come to the United States from Germany and had never seen an acorn squash.

I washed them, put them in a baking dish and, following his instructions, poured brown sugar and butter over them…and put them in the oven.

After about an hour, the squashes exploded and my oven door blew off. What a mess! He hadn't told me to cut the squashes in half before baking! That story's still being told at family gatherings, much to my embarrassment. —Anneliese Deising, Plymouth, Michigan
