Poor Man's Cookie

"Many years ago, as a teen, I was eager to try a new cookie recipe called 'Poor Man's Cookie,'" shares Linda Hammer of Richmond, Virginia.

"It called for lots of good ingredients, with a can of sweetened condensed milk poured over. I had never heard of sweetened condensed milk, so I substituted a can of evaporated milk instead.

"When the cookies were done, Mom and I both sampled one. Now Mom was the fourth of six children who had grown up on a small Pennsylvania farm in the 1920s. She was a kind person and always tried to say nice things, but after the first bite of that cookie she said, 'You know, honey, I've been poor all my life, and I've never tasted anything this bad.'

"I still laugh when I think of that incident."
