Dear Peggy: I'm trying to be careful with fats, calories and carbohydrates in my diet. How do I know how many grams of carbs is too many? —V.S., Great Falls, Montana
It's generally recommended that you consume 45 to 65 percent of calories from carbohydrates, 20 to 35 percent from fat and 10 to 35 percent from protein. The Percent Daily Values found on nutrition labels are based on 60 percent of calories from carbohydrate, 30 percent from fat and 10 percent from protein.
If you're eating, for example, 1,800 calories per day, you'd need 270g of carbohydrate each day (1,800 x 60 percent = 1,080 calories from carbs, or 270g).
