DEAR PEGGY: I have type 2 diabetes. What is the rule of thumb for how many carbohydrate and fat grams per meal I should stay under? —S. M., Santee, California

Newly diagnosed diabetics are usually referred to a registered dietitian, who will create a meal plan. The plan may incorporate the use of diabetic exchanges, carbohydrate counting or simple visual cues about portion sizes to help diabetics track what they are eating. Each plan is personalized to the individual's specific calorie needs, which means there isn't a general rule of thumb for carbohydrate and fat grams per meal that I can give you.

I would suggest asking your physician for a referral for a registered dietitian in your area who can determine your calorie needs and suggest a meal plan that's right for you.
