What is the best bacon to eat for a person with heart disease

Peggy Woodward, R.D.

DEAR PEGGY: Could you tell me what is the best bacon for a person that has had heart bypass surgery to eat instead of your everyday bacon? &mdash L. M., Starks, Louisiana

A nutritional breakdown of different types of bacon per slice is shown in the chart below.

You'll notice in the last row, the slices of bacon weigh from 0.5 to 1.3 ounces per slice, which is something to consider when comparing the nutritional numbers.

The center-cut, turkey bacon and extra lean turkey bacon are all fairly close per slice nutritionally. The key, however, is moderation. Since bacon is not a lean meat and is also high in sodium, someone with heart disease should really limit bacon and incorporate it into meals just on an occasional basis.
