What are good late-night snacks?

DEAR PEGGY: What are some good snack ideas for someone who works 2nd shift and is hungry when returning home at 11 p.m.? —M.A., Decatur, Illinois

I have similar recommendations for someone working 1st shift as I would for someone working 2nd shift. First, I would ask how hungry are you when you arrive home. If an after-work snack turns into a meal-size portion, consider having a snack earlier, while still at work, so you aren't ravenous when you get home.

The best snacks combine both starch and protein and add vitamins and minerals, not just empty calories. Adding protein keeps you feeling full longer than just starch alone. Here are a few ideas:

  • Apple or pear slices with cheese
  • Peanut butter on whole wheat toast
  • Cottage cheese with fresh fruit
  • Yogurt with granola
  • Dried fruit and nuts
  • Cereal and milk
  • Snack rye bread with cream cheese and sliced veggies
