Splitting a Cake

When I need to cut a layer cake in half horizontally to make a Boston cream pie or other filled cake, I use a length of unflavored dental floss or sewing thread to simplify the task. Just wrap the thread around the sides of the cake, making sure it is centered and even. Cross the ends of the thread over each other and pull to slice the cake into two layers. The thread makes a neater cut and leaves fewer crumbs than a knife. —Rose M., Lecanto, Florida
