Berry Flats

I like to store foods in my chest freezer, but I’m not very tall, so it’s hard to reach the items at the bottom…then I had a brain wave. Each year, I buy berries in bulk from local farms and freeze them. The berries come in deep, sturdy rectangular cardboard flats with slots on each end for carrying. I placed each type of berry in its own resealable freezer bag, setting all of the bags into one flat. I then used one of the remaining flats to hold frozen seafood, another to hold nuts and so on. The flats stack neatly inside of the freezer, and I don’t have trouble pulling out the flats on the bottom of the stack. Now when I need something, I can reach it easily and find it quickly as similar foods are all stored together. —Julia Trachsel, Victoria, British Columbia
