Easter Family Traditions

Grandma Gert introduced our family to Swieconka (sh-vee-en-soon-kah), the Polish tradition of blessing Easter food. On Holy Saturday, Grandma, Mom and I would head to church, our picnic baskets brimming with hard-cooked eggs, rye bread, Polish sausage, ham, lamb-shaped butter…a sampling of the food to be served on Easter Day. A wonderful aroma filled the church and whetted our appetites for the next morning! —Barb Gumieny, Wauwatosa, Wisconsin
