Diabetic Free Food
I've noticed that occasionally a "free food" is listed with the Diabetic Exchanges on a recipe. What does that mean? —K.P., Coos Bay, Oregon
A free food for a diabetic is any food or drink that contains less than 20 calories or less than 5 grams of carbohydrate per serving.
Some examples of a free food include 1 tablespoon of fat-free mayonnaise or 1 tablespoon of nondairy creamer
Diabetics should not eat more than three free foods a day, and those should be spread throughout the day. This is a general guide for diabetics, who must be careful to control their blood sugar.
