We discovered this recipe in Mexico. We couldn't figure out what made this French toast so delicious until we learned the secret was vanilla—one of Mexico's most popular flavorings. Since then, we've added a touch of vanilla to our waffle and pancake recipes. It makes them all very tasty. —Joe and Bobbi Schott, Castroville, Texas

Vanilla French Toast Recipe

Ingredients

  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 cup 2% milk
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch salt
  • 6 slices day-old bread
  • Maple syrup or cinnamon-sugar

Directions

  • In a shallow bowl, beat eggs; add the milk, sugar, vanilla and salt. Soak bread for 30 seconds on each side. Cook on a greased hot griddle until golden brown on both sides and cooked through. Serve with syrup or cinnamon-sugar. Yield: 2 servings.

This is pretty much the way I learned to make French Toast. My Dad is from Texas; however, I do not use quite as much sugar. It is absolutely delicious.

Oh my goodness! This was the BEST French toast I ever had! I made it with Texas Toast & got 6 slices out of it. I did not soak my slices for 30 seconds on each side as the recipe states, but it turned out perfect & I wouldn't change a thing!

This adds a nice flavor, we often use a little maple flavoring instead of the vanilla. Yummy

I am not sure why you would want to add sugar to the batter unless you weren't going to top it with syrup or cinnamon-sugar. I would think it would be too sweet.

This is how I make my french toast but instead of sugar I use cinnamon. I've tried it with sugar also.

I have always made French tost with vanilla & cinnamon. I don't use sugar or vanilla.

I have always used vanilla in my french toast but try using light cream instead of the milk or use half light cream and half milk...it adds a nice richness to the recipe ( and adds calories sorry). I also will use cinnamon raisin bread or just cinnamon bread for a variation on the bread.

Since when is French toast made WITHOUT vanilla and cinnamon? Otherwise you just have egg toast. I've been making it for decades like that. And my mother before me!

I add citrus tomy pancakes, such as lemon juice or orange juice. Really makes a difference.

I've used a similar recipe before and the best "tweek" I ever made was to use raisen bread. Mmmmmmmmmmmmmm!
