I made this cake before I found this recipe. I needed a desert for the family reunion so I used the same steps as for this cake, except I used a caramel icing with the toffee bits on top. The pan was empty by the end of the day and everyone wanted the recipe.

I've made this several times; it has become one of our favorite cakes. Because I couldn't find the candy bars, I sprinkle the top with Heath Toffee Bits instead.

I've made this little bit of heaven cake for quite a while. Everyone loves it and it's quick and easy to put together when you want to spend the lion's share of your time on a great meal. Golly David.s - What an angry little man you are. Perhaps you are better served by spending your time on an angry political site like HP? You'd fit right in.

Very good. Another version I make uses a marble cake mix, caramel topping and crushed butterfingers. Both are great combinations!

Reviewed on Mar. 19, 2012 by MLuck

I haven't made this version, but made what my family calls, "Skorr bar cake". We used a devil's food mix and a can of eagle brand as well a caramel ice cream topping. I used three, frozen, then crushed skorr bars, on top of the cake, then put the whipped cream on top and one more crushed skorr bar on top of the cream.(Skorr bars are in Canada and Britain too I think). Freezing the bars helps them crush better. My family loves it.

I was really curious to find out what a poke cake is, so I tried this out on the family. Wow, I'm so glad I did! A bit like chocolate sticky toffee pudding, with the added bonus of a gorgeous creamy, crunchy layer on top. Husband especially loved it.

So quick! Great for unexpected company. David, study English grammar prior to calling others stupid since you used "your" incorrectly.

My family just loved this dessert. I certainly will make it again and again. So easy for a cake that is so delicious.

Excellent version, especially for people with limited time. I have a version that also calls for a can of sweetened condensed milk. This has quite a few less calories. David, you obviously don't have a time issue between work and children. Go back to your kitchen and leave us alone. Oh, by-the-way, not all Americans are fat!!!! That is an ignorant assumption. Wonderful quick and easy when you need something on the fly. The people I "bake" for (btw David I'm a professional baker) love simple homecooked recipes. I make the chocolate cake and caramel sauce from scratch

I'm not American, but I love American style cooking. It is so easy and taste really good. I use to make everything from scratch, but now I make use of American assembling...lol I'm not entering any competitions, I just want my family to enjoy what I've made.

YOU'RE right, David, assembly would be a great category! I love assembly! Fast, easy, and delicious and this cake would be the perfect start to such a category.

Sounds like David is a bit angry. Perhaps if someone were to give him a piece--and I don't mean cake--he wouldn't be so cranky, and he wouldn't feel the need to deride us fat Americans and our cooking skills. Have a nice day, David!

I have made this cake a few times now and everytime I serve it I get great comments. It is so simple and tastes great!

Reviewed on Mar. 20, 2011 by conshanty

I used Smucker's butterscotch-caramel and had the same problem as another reviewer who said to use name brand topping because the off-brand stuff was watery. The cake was wet--like soaked in water, which I found unpleasant; but everybody loved the taste and everything else about it. I will try another brand of topping next time, and possibly use less.

Reviewed on Mar. 03, 2011 by tammymiller65

This cake came out awesome. It is super easy and tasted like you made it from scratch. I used just caramel topping instead of the butterscotch-caramel topping. I also added a 3/4 cup of chocolate chips to the batter before I baked it. It came out super moist and everyone just loved it. I will definitely made this one again and I loved it because it is so simple!!

I guess I'm the "odd" person who thought this cake was good but VERY sweet. Next time I make this, I will use about half of the recommended caramel topping, and definitely will not spread the caramel on the cake top.

I like to kick this recipe up one notch and replace the cool whip with cream cheese frosting. Variations of this recipe have been around for years. It can be found on the box of the Betty Crocker German Cake mix or in the Cake Doctor Book- which also suggests replacing the Heath bars with crushed Butterfinger candy bars. We like the Heath Bar recipe so well that I haven't wanted to try the Butterfinger variation.

I was convinced I had a reduced sugar chocolate cake mix for our Easter dessert toffee poke cake. Imagine my surprise when it turned out to be a reduced sugar yellow cake. I made it anyway making the yellow cake substitution. The cake was such a hit my 4 year old Granddaughter, Leah, announced she wants this cake for her 5th birthday party. It was a big hit.

I made this for a garden party I threw last year, and I've made it since then as well. First of all it is almost shamefully easy for such a pretty looking dessert. I use prepackaged toffee bits (no chocolate in em but no one complains) to make it faster. I get rave reviews everytime. I made it on a very hot muggy day once however and in transporting it all the whipped topping slid about 3 inches which made for a sticky mess. The cake still ate and was delicious but it might not be the best idea for an outdoor event

The first time I made this recipe was for the 50th birthday of a co-worker's of my daughter. It was a HUGE success. I was asked for the recipe by many. Since the first time I have made it many times. Initially I made a change in cutting calories which did not affect the taste of the cake nor the success rate of it either. It is one that you just cannot eat one small piece but keeping going back for more. I will continue to make it.
