Ingredients

  • 12 hard-cooked eggs
  • 12 cheesecloth squares (about 8 inches)
  • 1/4 cup vinegar
  • Liquid food coloring

Directions

  • Dry the eggs. Dampen cheesecloth with vinegar; wrap a square around each egg, gathering edges together and securing with a rubber band or string.
  • Holding tied end, squeeze drops of food colorings in random patterns on wrapped eggs. Repeat with other colors. Unwrap carefully; place in an egg carton to dry completely. Refrigerate until serving. Yield: 1 dozen.

Note: Cheesecloth is available in the housewares section of most grocery stores. Cotton cloth or paper towels may be substituted for the cheesecloth.

Tip

Coloring Eggs for Easter

If coloring the eggs for Easter, return them to the refrigerator as soon as you're done dyeing them. Don't let hard-cooked eggs stand at room temperature for more than 2 hours. If you plan on using hard-cooked eggs as Easter decorations, cook extra eggs for eating and discard the eggs on display. Don't eat any colored eggs that have cracked. Either throw them out immediately or use them for display and then discard.

I have not done this yet. I have been looking for Ruby Egg dye and they dont make it anymore. this is the closest thing to it. have to try this one.

We made these last year. We dyed the eggs while they were still hot. They were easy to handle because you could hold on to the cloth rather than the hot egg. The colors came out very bright and they dried right away because they were still hot. They all turned out beautifully.

We're doing Easter eggs today and having no cheesecloth and no time to go get any, the coffee filter hint is a life/time/saver. Love the novelty of tie-dyed eggs.

My daughter and her children use coffee filters then you don't have to cut squares of cloth.
