Mother made these fresh-tasting sloppy joes many times when I was growing up. She passed the recipe on to me when I got married. My brother-in-law says they're the best sandwiches he's ever tasted. And he ought to know—his name is Joe! —Ellen Stringer, Bourbonnais, Illinois

No need to change anything in this recipe, it is the best I've ever had! I usually make a double batch to take to parties, and I always come home with an empty pot.

I made this for a get together where many sloppy joes recipes have been served in the past. They were a hit, and I am now the go to person for the sloppy joes.

Absolutely the best sloppy joe recipe published anywhere.

I have made basically this same recipe. With a couple exceptions that I think are better. The ground beef has to be fried and mashed with a potato masher to get rid of the lumps of meat. The secret to a good taste is lots of celery and onion and bell pepper. Don't measure. Cut as much as you want. no ketchup, no Worchester, no steak sauce, no paprika. Brown sugar is a must but more like up to 1/4 cup, to taste. Vinegar the same as the sugar. These two make the great taste. Taste & add, taste & add. I use tomatoe puree (the good kind, not store brand) big difference. Simmer 45 - 60 minutes UNCOVERED. Let us know how you like it. OH! It is better the next day. So when I know I need this for an event, I always make it a day ahead and refrigerate it. Strange but true!

This is a great recipe. My family loved the taste of these Sloppy Joes.Better than buying the Sloppy Joes in the can. I will make these again, and never buy anything else in the stores. --Cindy Monerde, Kissimmee, Florida

Thank You. I look forward to making this. I loved sloppy joes as a kid but do not like canned sloppy joe sauces. Been looking for a good recipe for awhile. This sounds Delicious (sans green peppers).

This can be made vegetarian just by using 2 packages of Morningstar Burger Crumbles. It works very well, because all the ingredients melt together. Nobody would even know their isn't meat in it!

I found this recipe in an issue of Taste of Home several years ago. It has become my favorite recipe and I have had to recopy it several times because of the worn and splattered edges.

Great recipe! It just needed a few fixer uppers. No steak sauce or ketchup and garlic powder instead of salt. Drop the paprika and it sings.

Sweet. This younger generation likes thing sweet. I doctored it after following recipe by adding a massive dollop of hot sauce. Hamburger rolls are now sweet, dairies add sugar to milk to please modern taste, even mayo is now sweet. Guess I am an old lady who prefers the taste to be savory not sweet.

I use to be a "canned" sloppy joe fan. I wanted to try something from scratch cuz I grew out of the "canned" mix. Made this for a family Packer game get-together and it disappeared. I didn't think it was difficult to make. Will definitely make this again :)

This is great! Like others said, not too sweet, not too tangy, perfect! I did err when I tried to half the recipe and didn't half the sauce. Perfect! I think it would be too dry without double sauce. I didn't have crushed tomatoes, so I basically crushed/pureed 2 cans of diced (drained) plus 2 chopped/seeded tomatoes. I'll keep it that way because that's what I usually have on hand. I also put the onion, celery and green pepper in the food processor. My daughter who hates all three didn't even know they were in there. I added a sprinkle of pepper and garlic powder, but other than doubling sauce, used all ingredients as listed. Took to a family gathering and got many compliments.

I love Sloppy Joes and have tested many recipes over the years but this is my absolute favorite. You can tweek the ingredients to suit your taste if you like but I like this just like it's written.

I LOVE this recipe. It is a fantastic blend of flavors, and my very picky family loves them. It isn't often that they ask for repeats in my adventures in recipes, but this one is definitely a keeper.

We did not care for these. The crushed tomatoes made them too tomato-ey and they weren't sweet enough. I made these twice but I won't be making them again. I found a way better and easier recipe.
