Mother made these fresh-tasting sloppy joes many times when I was growing up. She passed the recipe on to me when I got married. My brother-in-law says they're the best sandwiches he's ever tasted. And he ought to know—his name is Joe! —Ellen Stringer, Bourbonnais, Illinois

I have made basically this same recipe. With a couple exceptions that I think are better. The ground beef has to be fried and mashed with a potato masher to get rid of the lumps of meat. The secret to a good taste is lots of celery and onion and bell pepper. Don't measure. Cut as much as you want. no ketchup, no Worchester, no steak sauce, no paprika. Brown sugar is a must but more like up to 1/4 cup, to taste. Vinegar the same as the sugar. These two make the great taste. Taste & add, taste & add. I use tomatoe puree (the good kind, not store brand) big difference. Simmer 45 - 60 minutes UNCOVERED. Let us know how you like it. OH! It is better the next day. So when I know I need this for an event, I always make it a day ahead and refrigerate it. Strange but true!

This is a great recipe. My family loved the taste of these Sloppy Joes.Better than buying the Sloppy Joes in the can. I will make these again, and never buy anything else in the stores. --Cindy Monerde, Kissimmee, Florida

Great Sloppy Joe recipe. I did add a little bit of Red Pepper to give it more zip.

Thank You. I look forward to making this. I loved sloppy joes as a kid but do not like canned sloppy joe sauces. Been looking for a good recipe for awhile. This sounds Delicious (sans green peppers).

This can be made vegetarian just by using 2 packages of Morningstar Burger Crumbles. It works very well, because all the ingredients melt together. Nobody would even know their isn't meat in it!

I found this recipe in an issue of Taste of Home several years ago. It has become my favorite recipe and I have had to recopy it several times because of the worn and splattered edges.

Great recipe! It just needed a few fixer uppers. No steak sauce or ketchup and garlic powder instead of salt. Drop the paprika and it sings.
