For a "picnic perfect" dessert, this moist delicious cake travels and slices very well. With chocolate chips, walnuts and raisins, it's a real crowd-pleaser. -Marian Platt, Sequim, Washington

This cake quickly became a favorite for family and company get-togethers! I've made it for years. I use unsweetened applesauce, which does not affect the finished product. Cutting back the amount of ground cloves a bit might appeal to some folks.

Excellent cake! My family isn't big on raisins or cloves so I left them out and substituted pecans instead of walnuts. Very yummy!Dee

This is yet another TOH recipe that I prepared, brought in to work, and that my co-workers fell upon like starving wolves.I used a pint jar of my mom's homemade applesauce. It worked out great texture-wise, but because it's already well-seasoned with cinnamon I used a lighter hand with the cinnamon in the cake batter. Next time I think I'll go easier on the other spices as well if I use the homemade applesauce. However, if I were to use the jarred supermarket applesauce, I'd add the full teaspoon of cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice and cloves.
