Apple Recipes
Subtle differences in taste and texture mean it matters which apple you pick for your dish. Happily, most can fill in easily for another variety. Here's how we made our selections for the following recipes.
Spinach Almond Salad
The sweet and slightly tangy dressing of Spinach Almond Salad pairs well with any apple that's good for snacking. We used Granny Smith because of its full flavor. The light green skin also contrasts nicely with the dark green spinach.
Apple Pork Chops
Apple Pork Chops were tested with Braeburn apples, which hold their shape when sliced and sauteed. Their sweet-tart flavor complements this recipe's savory ingredients. Cortland, Empire or Pink Lady would also work well.
Apple Crisp
Granny Smith apples are ideal for crisps because their tartness balances the dessert's sweet flavor. Jonathans would also make an excellent choice for this Apple Crisp because they have a similar flavor and firm texture, perfect for baking.
Caramel Apple Strata
The tart flavor of Granny Smith apples complements the rich caramel in this Caramel Apple Strata well. Sweet-tart apples, such as Braeburn, Empire or Pink Lady, would also work, but may add more sweetness.
