We made a low(er) cal/fat version, using diet root beer, Cool Whip Free, and applesauce instead of oil. It was delicious and nearly guilt-free! :)

No one could taste the root beer.

I love root beer and was so excited to try this recipe. However, I disappointed because I followed the recipe exactly, but it did not taste like root beer AT ALL. Only after I told everyone that it was supposed to be root beer flavored, they said, "Oh yeah, I THINK I can taste a little bit of root beer."

The "frosting" did taste a little bit like the foam of a root beer float when I first made it. However, after several hours in the refrigerator when I ate another piece, it had lost that flavor, too.

Also, I did need to use both envelopes of the Dream Whip in order to cover the top of the cake.

Although it did not taste like root beer, it was a very good tasting PLAIN cake...very moist.

So I would probably make it again as a regular cake, but definitely would not call it a root beer float cake.

If I added more root beer to the cake batter would it be too liquid-y? I really would love to find a recipe that actually does tase like root beer cake.

My 9 year old grandsons made this yesterday for their pappaw's birthday...It turned out great. The cake is very light and moist and the icing was fabulous. My recipe though calls for three egg whites instead of 2 eggs..We will definitely make this cake again!

After making the topping..im in heaven..the foamey part of the float is my fave...the topping is darn close to the float foam ; ) (also added a 1/2-3/4 tsp of homemade rootbeer concentrate. Cake  I am sure my daughter's Kindergarten classmates will enjoy these to celebrate her 6th Birthday!

I followed the directions in the recipe not the box, it is very light and airy. I did not have any rootbeer concentrate, so I condensed about 1 cup of soda, + touch of pure vanilla, on med-low..I added that to the batter and it kicked it up a notch ; )

you should put some root beer extract in if you can't taste the root beer enough. just an idea :)

Do you mix the cake mix just as the box tell's you too or just what you have on here for the ingredients?

Flavor is subtle but yummy. The frosting is very good.

This cake was yummy, very moist, but we were all disappointed as to the lack of root beer taste. If I didn't tell them it was rootbeer, they wouldn't have known. Frosting was good, a stronger root beer flavor. I may try it again with strawberry pop. That sounds good!

Wonderfully tasty, moist and delicious with a wonderful root beer flavour, this cake is a surefire winner! I really enjoyed it when I made it and I will definitely make it again!

*I used a WAL-MART brand of root beer which tastes stronger than A&W but I don't mind because I like my root beer with a little bite! I'm going to try it with Barque's Root Beer next time!*

I love this cake! I think it's best when made a day or so before needed. I also add 1/4 to 1/2 tsp root beer concentrate to amp up the flavor. It's SO GOOD!

this was really easy to make specially since I'm not very good at cooking. the cake was delicious. it was light and fluffy. it didnt really taste like root beer though. however the frosting had that root beer flavor but my frosting came out too runny. next time i would probably place the frosting in the fridge for a bit to help it thicken up. all in all its a very good receipt and i would make it again.

Got lots of compliments that the cake was very moist.

I actually double the amount of "frosting" b/c I like a moist cake. My kids love it!!!

Made this for the 4th of July. The kids and adults loved it! It is very easy to make. I used both envelopes of Dream Whip for the icing. One envelope was not enough.

I have done this a bunch of times, but try orange or strawberry soda!! I have even used grape, sure is a good treat on a hot summer day.

I made this cake the first time for my grandkids and they love it and the second was for Easter for a friend and they loved it and now my husband is asking for it.

Absolutely delicious! Sometimes I don't even make the frosting and just serve the cake straight out of the oven with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. YUM. :)

My family really enjoys this cake, it's a winner!

There was an error in the beating instructions for this cake. They should read: "Beat on low speed for 2 minutes or stir by hand for 3 minutes." Everything else is correct.

Sorry for any inconvenience and thank you for bringing it to our attention.

This is a fun cake for kids to make; it tastes faintly like Root Beer. I prefer regular icing to the whipped topping mix, though.

should this really beat on low for 30 minutes??

Reviewed on Jun. 29, 2008 by red_savage1

A box of "Dream Whip" is what I buy. You get it in the baking area of your grocery store.
