Root beer barrel candies and a spice cake-like batter give these cupcakes an old-fashioned flavor. Kids will especially love them! —Dot Kraemer, Cape May Court House, New Jersey

These were really dry and didn't have a root beer flavor at all. I will not be making these again...sorry!

I also made these cupcakes and they were a total disappointment. In order to actually have some of the root beer taste in the batter, you will need to use root beer flavoring...not the drink. My children hated them and asked that I never make them again.

Made the root beer cupcakes using the recipe provided, not a boxed mix. They were very heavy and dry, not light and moist as we prefer our cakes and cupcakes. My husband asked me to never make them again. Sorry, but these were a disappointment.

I used a vanilla butter frosting on mine and call them Root Beer Float Cakes. These are fantastic. I will definitely make these again. My uncle sends me home with two liter bottles of Hires root beer every time I visit so when I saw this recipe I knew I had to try it. I would also try my butter frosting using a little root beer instead of milk and see how that tastes. YUM

These turned out fantastic! I reduced the butter to 2 sticks instead of 3 because it just seemed like too much. The recipe for the frosting made more than I needed, I would half it next time. Root beer barrel candies were hard to find, but I finally got some at a dollar store.

Could you use a spice cake mix and use root beer instead of water?
