Rich Chocolate Cake Bars Recipe

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup butter, softened
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 4 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 can (16 ounces) chocolate syrup
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup chopped nuts
  • GLAZE:
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/3 cup milk
  • 1/3 cup butter, cubed
  • 1/2 cup semisweet chocolate chips
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Directions

  • In a large bowl, cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in eggs and vanilla. Beat in syrup. Combine the flour, baking powder and salt; gradually add to creamed mixture. Stir in nuts. Pour in a greased 15-in. x 10-in. x 1-in. baking pan.
  • Bake at 350° for 20-22 minutes or until a toothpick inserted near the center comes out clean.
  • For glaze, in a heavy saucepan, combine the sugar, milk and butter. Bring to a boil over medium heat; boil for 1 minute. Remove from the heat. Add chips and vanilla; beat with a wooden spoon until smooth. Spread over warm bars. Cool on a wire rack before cutting. Yield: about 3 dozen.

Great recipe - received a similar one from a sister-in-law then lost track of it. This seems to be the closest to that family favorite.

I will note just a couple of changes from my original.

#1 There was no baking powder in mine. The bars were a bit heavier but seemed to match very well the texture of the frosting.

#2 My recipe called for 1 cup chocolate chips AND 1 cup mini marshmallows added to the boiled mixture. It took a bit longer to get everything melted but the results were luscious.

These bars are as close as you can get to a combination of cake and candy bar. : )
