These unique cookies have been a part of our holiday tradition for as long as I can remember. My mother made them when I was little, and now I often bake a batch for my own family.Mindy Young, Hanover, Pennsylvania

I am unsure about all of the negative reviews. It's true the cookies do not spread, but this gives them a very "cake-like texture". They were moist, and the chocolate chips give a nice contrast. Make sure you fold in, NOT stir in, the egg whites and chocolate chips. If you stir it in, you've undone your work beating the eggwhites to stiff peaks. The icing was just fine for me. If you dislike buttercream, though, the icing recipe is not for you. I took these to campus, and I came home with one cookie left. A secretary offered to pay me to bake her two dozen for Christmas so obviously, other folks loved them also. They might be better with a cream cheese icing, though, since that is what I think of on red velvet cake.

Great taste but the icing was horrible...the consistency was terrible and the taste was not good...it was like something was left out of the ingredients (yes, I checked to be sure I didn't leave anything out ;->). I will definitely make them again but will use a different recipe for the icing. I would also recommend flattening them out with a spoon on the cookie sheet before baking since they do not spread.

I made these cookies for a cookie exchange and could not have been more disappointed. They were time consuming and involved a lot of ingredients. The cookies were very average. The icing did not set up, and the consistency of the cookie was very unusual.

Just spent my Sunday afternoon making these and thinking how much we would enjoy. They were not up to the standard I expect to see in Taste of Home.

I'm not sure what the last two reviewers found wrong with the recipe...I made it last night and my family really enjoyed them. I must have made them too large, though, because I only got 5 dozen out of the recipe, and as a result, I only made 2/3 of the frosting and it was more than enough. They are very sweet and rich.

I always have good luck with Taste of Home but these cookies were not good. They were too puffy and bland. I made red velvet cookies earlier this week using cake mix and they were 100% better, not to mention so much easier.

I have no idea how this recipe got 4 1/2 stars, it was awful!!! Tasted terrible and it wasn't an easy cookie to make, 4 cups of flour????? It was a waste of ingredients and time to prepare these cookies. I was hoping they would be good, but they were so bad I didn't even bake the whole batter, but threw it in the garbage.

The taste was different- not sweet. Wondered if the vanilla was missing in the recipe? Think I would add that if I try again.

Just finished baking these cookies. Outstanding cookie! The dough is sticky but mine spread out nicely (just like the picture). I haven't frosted them yet, will do tomorrow. When frosted these will be very attractive cookies for Christmas. They're like a chocolate chip cookie but with a fancy Christmas twist.
