These unique cookies have been a part of our holiday tradition for as long as I can remember. My mother made them when I was little, and now I often bake a batch for my own family.Mindy Young, Hanover, Pennsylvania

I had high hopes for these cookies as I LOVE red velvet. Planned on red cookies with green sprinkles. However, these cookies tasted like flour and crumbled in our mouths. I baked the next batch for less time thinking I may have overbaked them, but those also crumbled. The cream cheese frosting I topped them with was the only thing we liked. Glad we tasted before I sprinkled so I didn't waste them. Will not be making them again.

This was the one cookie my husband requested I make again this year that he remembered. I wasn't crazy about them but my "Cookie King" husband was. I may try cream cheese frosting though this time .

I do not understand the bad reviews some have made. I always make cookies for friends and also sell them at Christmas time. This yer, this was one of the "new" cookies that I decided to try. They were were loved by my friends at the church I attend and several people ordered whole batches of these cookies. This is a definate cookie to save!

These cookies just weren't as moist as I had hoped. The flavor was good. Overall, lots of work for a cookie which wasn't that special.

So many ingredients - not a favorite with my family - did not like the taste of them - will not make again.

WONDERFUL. My husband's new favorite - didn't want me to share with work but did anyway and they love them too. Another recipe I'll have to make every Christmas.

The cookies were okay not horrible but definitely not good enough to make again, I could taste the shortening in them, followed the recipe to a T, but they were just a little too dense coupled with the shortening flavor, its more than I can handle, definitely won't make this one again.

I also followed the recipe exactly as stated, even folding in the egg whites and chps by hand. I have never been a red velvet fan, but really enjoy these cookies. They are just sweet enough and the chips add a wonderful taste to the cookie. I really liked the frosting. It wasn't overly sweet, but I did add red sugar to the tops instead of the cookie crumbs. I would definitely make these cookies again.

I thought I had misread the recipe, but I had followed it correctly. These cookies have no taste. They taste like flour. I had to change the frosting to give them some flavor. Not going to be a favorite in this house.

Just finished icing the last of them and they are very good. I know my sons that always want Red Velvet cake will be very happy to have these cookies.

I am unsure about all of the negative reviews. It's true the cookies do not spread, but this gives them a very "cake-like texture". They were moist, and the chocolate chips give a nice contrast. Make sure you fold in, NOT stir in, the egg whites and chocolate chips. If you stir it in, you've undone your work beating the eggwhites to stiff peaks. The icing was just fine for me. If you dislike buttercream, though, the icing recipe is not for you. I took these to campus, and I came home with one cookie left. A secretary offered to pay me to bake her two dozen for Christmas so obviously, other folks loved them also. They might be better with a cream cheese icing, though, since that is what I think of on red velvet cake.

Great taste but the icing was horrible...the consistency was terrible and the taste was not good...it was like something was left out of the ingredients (yes, I checked to be sure I didn't leave anything out ;->). I will definitely make them again but will use a different recipe for the icing. I would also recommend flattening them out with a spoon on the cookie sheet before baking since they do not spread.

A waste of time and ingredients. these are inedible.

I made these cookies for a cookie exchange and could not have been more disappointed. They were time consuming and involved a lot of ingredients. The cookies were very average. The icing did not set up, and the consistency of the cookie was very unusual.

Just spent my Sunday afternoon making these and thinking how much we would enjoy. They were not up to the standard I expect to see in Taste of Home.

I'm not sure what the last two reviewers found wrong with the recipe...I made it last night and my family really enjoyed them. I must have made them too large, though, because I only got 5 dozen out of the recipe, and as a result, I only made 2/3 of the frosting and it was more than enough. They are very sweet and rich.

I always have good luck with Taste of Home but these cookies were not good. They were too puffy and bland. I made red velvet cookies earlier this week using cake mix and they were 100% better, not to mention so much easier.

I have no idea how this recipe got 4 1/2 stars, it was awful!!! Tasted terrible and it wasn't an easy cookie to make, 4 cups of flour????? It was a waste of ingredients and time to prepare these cookies. I was hoping they would be good, but they were so bad I didn't even bake the whole batter, but threw it in the garbage.

The taste was different- not sweet. Wondered if the vanilla was missing in the recipe? Think I would add that if I try again.

Just finished baking these cookies. Outstanding cookie! The dough is sticky but mine spread out nicely (just like the picture). I haven't frosted them yet, will do tomorrow. When frosted these will be very attractive cookies for Christmas. They're like a chocolate chip cookie but with a fancy Christmas twist.

I just didn't care for them, they seem so rich and to me the flavors don't quite go together. Guess I was thinking of The Cheesecake Factory's Red Velvet cheesecake and they don't come anywhere near that!

The cookies tasted good and I loved the chocolate chips inside- nice touch! My issue was with the shape. The dough was quite think and sticky so the cookies stayed as blobs after baking. I tried smoothing it down before baking, but the stickiness wouldn't allow for it. Friends loved the taste but they agreed the visual appeal could've been better. Maybe it was me, I don't know.

I thought this recipe was a keeper - I did like someone else and just added the sprinkles instead of cookie crumbs - I also packed them lightly with wax paper in between - it doesn't seem to be a problem - also my neighbor asked for the recipe

I just finished making 10 dozen of these for a cookie exchange tomorrow with nine women. My husband and I along with 2 neighbors think they are delicious. I will make more next week so I have some on hand for company over the holidays. They also look nice on a cookie platter because of the pink and white (frosting) colors.

These are so good! I made the cookies larger than they should have been, but they still turned out great! The frosting is very good, just make sure the cookies have cooled completely before you frost them.

This is unusual but delicious cookie recipe. All of those red velvet lovers will need to try this recipe. I did not crush 8 cookies but two and that was enough to garnish the tops. The chocolate chips really gave a nice surprise taste treat to these soft cake like cookie. The frosting is rich and decadent- I really like the flavor combination- thanks taste of home

What a fun recipe! I love red velvet cake, but it doesn't transport so well to give to family & friends on cookie trays. I tried a batch of these this morning and they were well received by my taste testers. Thank you for sharing.
