Peeps Sunflower Cake Recipe

Peeps Sunflower Cake Recipe Peeps Sunflower Cake Recipe photo by Taste of Home Rating 5

The inspiration for this cake came from one of my favorite flowers, the sunflower. The yellow peeps make eye-catching flower petals, and I carefully placed chocolate chips in a circular pattern to resemble the seeds in the middle of a sunflower. This cake is easy, but looks quite impressive. —Bethany Eledge, Cleveland, Tennessee

Peeps Sunflower Cake Recipe
  • Prep: 15 min. Bake: 30 min. + cooling
  • Yield: 12 Servings
15 30 45

Ingredients

  • 1 package yellow cake mix (regular size)
  • 2 cans (16 ounces each) chocolate frosting
  • 19 to 20 yellow chick Peeps candies
  • 1-1/2 cups semisweet chocolate chips

Directions

  • Prepare and bake cake mix according to package directions, using two parchment paper-lined and greased 9-in. round baking pans. Cool in pans 10 minutes before removing to wire racks; remove paper. Cool completely.
  • If cake layers have rounded tops, trim with a long serrated knife to make level. Spread frosting between layers and over top and sides of cake.
  • For petals, arrange Peeps around edge of cake, curving slightly and being careful not to separate chicks. For sunflower seeds, arrange chocolate chips in center of cake. Yield: 12 servings.

This was the hit dessert of our Easter brunch. I used raspberry jam in the middle of the cake to make it extra special.

I made this as an Easter dessert. Rather than a yellow cake with canned chocolate frosting, I used Ghirardelli 'Ultimate Fudge Brownie' mix to make a single 9-inch brownie and used the glaze packet from the brownies. I only needed 16 (not 19) Peeps. The cake looked fabulous and was a big hit. I had no problem with the Peeps sliding.

This recipe was AWESOME! Very quick & easy to make. Tasted great!! I made 2 smaller cakes instead of 1 big one decorating it with different color peeps on each. My friends & family loved it!!! :) Will def. be making again!

I did this with a white cake mix but can't use any chocolate so I used a buttercream colored a light brown. I can out really nice.

I love sunflowers and my husband loves peeps , so I knew I had to make this cake. It was so easy to make. Looked just like the picture. I placed the peeps inward more not right on the edge and they stayed fine. Can't wait to try different color peeps and cake choices.

I made this tonight...couldnt find jumbo chocolate chips which is what a friend suggested I use to save time, so I used hershey kisses instead. Turned out great!

My 4 year old loved helping to decorate this cake. It turned out great. We can't wait to eat it tomorrow for Easter!

If you love peeps then this cake is for you! My kids have helped me make this for the last 3 years and is a must for Easter!

Wish i would have read the reviews first. My peeps are sliding off even with tooth picks. Should have put them up father on the cake.

I made a test cake for a goodbye party and everyone at work thought it was very clever. I'm taking it to our Easter dinner this Sunday. I too used toothpicks to hold the Peeps in place--I think the problem is putting them too close to the edge.

I made this cake with pink peeps last year and it was a huge success! I also sprinkled chocolate sprinkles in the middle as I couldn't get my chocolate chips as nice and pretty as it is in the picture and it turned out fabulous! I plan on making one this easter with purple peeps!

I made this cake for my son's pre-school Easter celebration. It was so easy, it must have taken me 10-15 minutes to decorate my cake. I used marbled chocolate chips and dusted them with the yellow sugar crumbs from the Peeps. The result was fabulous!

Very easy and looked great. I used toothpicks to keep the peeps on. For some reason (maybe the weight of the peeps on toothpicks) the cake broke down the middle. No one noticed because of all of the chocolate chips.

Easy to Make and looks great! My daughter already ordered one for her birthday cake - she collects sunflowers, so it would be perfect for it!

This cake turned out as great looking as the picture and was not difficult to make. My family was very impressed as it looks like it takes a lot of time to put together, but it is just the opposite.

Was a huge hit at Easter, even though mine didn't turn out quite as pretty, everyone loved it.

What a fun cake!! Made it for combination Easter/Birthday and it was such a hit. It was such a happy cake. Kids loved it. So simple to put together and I'll be making more this spring and summer.

I couldn't find yellow peeps so I used pink ones! Oh and I am so glad I did! It was so pretty! I had to use toothpicks to keep the peeps on. The other thing I added was a little bit of chocolate sprinkles to fill in between the chocolate chips, I then sprinkled the pink sugar that was left over from the peeps on top to finish it off. The cake was so pretty no one wanted to eat it at first!

We used Devil's food cake and milk chocolate frosting... it was really delicious with those chocolate chips!

My 4 year old daughter and I made this for Easter... it was so much fun to put together and everyone thought it was so creative and fun! <3

this was a very fun recipe to make and eat. The biggest problem was that the peeps would not stay on so I had to use toothpicks. I also used a chocolate cake.

This recipe has the most "Wow" factor and it is so easy to make. The peep lovers in my family went crazy for it! I really wish peeps were made year around. This cake would be so cute with red white and blue peeps for the 4th of July .

I made a homemade chocolate cake (the sour cream chocolate from Taste of Home) and homemade frosting, but decorated it according to this recipe and it was the brightest item on the bake sale table! The peeps tried to slide a little so I tied a string around them until the icing set.

I made one of these as a raffle item for the bake sale at work. It was the talk of the day. It was so easy to make but looks so Grand.

I took this to my Son's house for lunch and the Great Grands had a fit over it. All little boys and they squealed like little girls.
