Mom's Oven-Barbecued Ribs Recipe

Mom's Oven-Barbecued Ribs Recipe Mom's Oven-Barbecued Ribs Recipe photo by Taste of Home Rating 5

My mom made these tender ribs for special Sunday suppers when we were growing up. A few common ingredients are all you need to make the zesty sauce that coats them. My family's eyes light up when I bring a plate of these ribs to the table, and company never suspects how easy they are to prepare. —Yvonne White Williamson, New York

YUMMO!!! This was so easy and so very tasty! I used most of the recipe as is except I added the worchestershire, hot sauce, some brown sugar, and a bit of ketchup to store-bought bbq sauce. I didn't need to cook my ribs the full time either. They were done in just over 2 hours! I added meat tenderizer (just to make sure nothing was tough...LOL!!!!). The family could hardly wait to eat and I got two thumbs-up from my Hubby! Thanks for a great recipe; I will definitely make this one again!

Easy and delicious....my kind of meal!

Very good, just what I've been looking for. I'm so tired of those sweet barbecue sauces. The only things I changed was to turn the temp down to 300 while they were cooking (covered). I could see that the sauce was boiling. Also I did not uncover & bake 30 minutes longer, they were done at that point & beginning to dry out. This is a keeper, thanks for the recipe.

This was so good! My son comes home from college in 2 weeks & I can't wait to make these when he's home. He will love them! The rest of the family gave the "thumbs up" on this recipe.

So Good! Made these ribs and they are very good. I did add a little brown sugar to the sauce and a little liquid smoke. I will defineatly make this recipe again.

Love this! My mom asks me to make it all the time and says its better than hers which is a major accomplishment.

This was good & spice but I like it sweet. I boiled the meat 35 mins., baked in 400 oven til dried a little, added sauce and baked 30 mins more at 350. Tender

i have made this recipe a few times and loved it. i went back and read the reviews and decided to add 1/2 c br sugar as others had suggested. it was even better than before.....so, go ahead and add the brown sugar. it really adds to the overall flavor profile.....great and easy recipe.

Can't get any easier! I really enjoyed these "as is" and my sister thought they were wonderful. That being said, next time I think I'll try them with either brown sugar or the apricot preserves and honey being added as a previous reviewer commented.

These were great! Used first time when our BBQ was out of order and now it seems so much easier to do them this way than on the BBQ! I didn't like the sauce though, it was like a hot tomato sauce and I would most definitely say it needed the sugar. I just use my own BBQ sauce.

Excellent flavor and easy to make.

I made 'as is' and was excellent and easier than my typical go-to recipe. But, for those that wanted a sweeter sauce... In the Feb 2008 'Homestyle Classics' small Taste of Home grocery cookbook... An additional hint by another user is included at the bottom of the recipe: "When I bake spare ribs, I add apricot preserves and a little honey to my favorite barbecue sauce to brush over the meat. The ribs are tangy and delicious!'

To those asking about whether or not to use brown sugar, it would depend on the kind of BBQ sauce you prefer. I don't like sweet BBQ sauces and it ruins most BBQ recipes for me. I tried this recipe without any brown sugar, just as written, and it was PERFECT for me. Loved it and yes, i will be making it again. I tried it for my husband today for father's day. He loved it. If i were cooking it for myself, i would probably make it spicier, but definitely not sweeter.

We totally enjoy this recipe!! I tend to bake the ribs for a little longer to make them extra tender for my kids - and a little bit for me too!

This recipe was delicious. i made a few minor changes. Instead of 1/8 tsp hot sauce I used cayenne pepper and I also added 1/6 cup of Maple Syrup and 1/6 cup of Apple Cider Vinegar. I roasted the ribs for 45 minutes in a roasting pan and then placed ribs in a baking pan covered with the barbeque sauce.

I added half a cup of sauted onions intead of the onion powder to sauce. I did not use the brown sugar. My whole family really liked these just as they are. Definately a keeper!

why do I have to print all of the nutrition facts for every recipes? When I want a recipe that is all I want I do not want to waste 5 sheets of paper getting a bunch of nonsence that I don't care about. I want a recipe only. How can I get just the recipes?

this turned out very good. i did add brown sugar for a little more sweetness and flour for thickness and it was perfect thanks to everyones comments.

Reviewed on Dec. 26, 2008 by tanuwij

Agreed with previous comment. This is easy and tasted good. I only cooked mine for 1.5 hour, and uses flour to thicken the sauce.

Easy and very good. Uses a lot of ketchup, when I have not had enough I have used a "taste of home" recipe for ketchup to make up the difference using tomato sauce and spices. Turns out great both ways. Gonna make 'em again tonight!

Reviewed on Sep. 30, 2008 by thankG0d

I didnt use as much water because I wanted my sauce thicker and I used more hot sauce because I like it spicy and it turned out fabulous. It didnt need brown sugar because the ketchup added just the right amount of sweetness. Thanks for the recipe, no wonder it has a blue ribbon!

Reviewed on Aug. 30, 2008 by buddy4

Yes, I have had it both ways it should have brown sugar in it, otherwise its just a tomato sauce with no sweetness to it.

Reviewed on Apr. 28, 2008 by mapanda

I agree with badkitty's comments. I looked over the recipe ingredients, and there is nothing in the sauce to make it sweet, like most barbeque sauces. You could use a bottled barbecue sauce, if you are in doubt of the sauce part of this recipe.

Should 1/2 cup brown sugar be in this recipe originally?I saw this recipe on another site with the addition of brown sugar. Is that supposed to be in the original recipe? I want to make this tommorrow-with or without the sugar? Thanks for any help.

Adjust seasonings to taste - maybe more garlic powder - than - onion powder ! Also use Chris and Pitts BBQ sauce as base - alternate between HICKORY and ORIGINAL !!

I am so glad to see this recipe again! I lost my recipe card and was pretty sure it was a Taste of Home recipe, but I have so many of the books and magazines and I was wasting a lot of time looking. Thank God for the internet! I'm a newbee at this computer stuff but I'm finding more and more applications to my simple everyday life. THANK YOU TASTE OF HOME! ( p.s.THIS RECIPE IS GREAT! Try it.)
