Mom's Old-Fashioned Cutouts

Ingredients
- 1 cup butter, softened
- 1-1/2 cups sugar
- 1 egg
- 1/2 cup sour cream
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 4 cups all-purpose flour, sifted
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon or ground nutmeg
- 2 cups confectioners' sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 3 to 4 tablespoons heavy whipping cream
- Food coloring, optional
Directions
- In a large bowl, cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat
- in the egg, then sour cream and vanilla. In another bowl, mix the
- flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt and cinnamon; gradually beat
- into creamed mixture.
- Divide dough into three portions. Shape each into a disk; wrap in
- plastic wrap. Refrigerate for 30 minutes or until easy to handle.
- On a lightly floured surface, roll each portion of dough to 1/4-in.
