Mini Hot Dogs 'n' Meatballs Recipe

Mini Hot Dogs 'n' Meatballs Recipe Mini Hot Dogs 'n' Meatballs Recipe photo by Taste of Home Rating 5

Hot appetizers don't come much easier than this recipe. It's so popular I usually double the recipe if I have a larger crock pot. You can vary the meats to suit your family's tastes, or increase the heat factor by using a spicier barbecue or spaghetti sauce. Serve with fancy party picks. —Andrea Chamberlain, Macedon, New York

i agree it does help to read what the submitter writes and the directions. but i also agree it should have been put in the recipe about the party picks. i am a seasoned cook so i can read a recipe and guess what needs to be done. but for those that cant the whole directions are needed and just bcuz someone doesnt know how to do it dont mean someone needs to make such rude comments. some people in this world need to be more considerate but im also glad there are still nice sweet people in this world. WHAT U DO WITH THIS RECIPE FOR THOSE THAT DONT UNDERSTAND IT U PUT EVERYTHING IN THE CROCK POT AS DIRECTED THEN WHEN U SERVE IT U PUT A MEATBALL, PEPPERONI AND LITTLE SMOKIE ON A PARTY STICK ARRANGE IT ON A SERVING PLATTER. DO EACH ONE LIKE THAT :)

Made this for the first time for co-workers for a pot luck. Everyone loved it and asked for the recipe. The second time I made it I used a stick of pepperoni and cut thicker slices instead of using the bags of presliced. I liked it much better.

I made a really big batch of these, & everyone loved them!! We were having quite a few young children over that night so I didn't want to make them too hot, I used ketchup & garlic BBQ sauce. I got quite e few compliments! Everyone wanted to know where I got the recipe!

Yummy. Big hit with the guys and kids. I don't believe crab filled endive leaves would have been better for a super bowl party. I think this forum is to comment and give tweaks possibly on THIS recipe?

maybe someone should check my word choice on my previous comment, maybe the word should be inappropriate.

have not made this recipe yet. I think the comment left by Bleugerman was totally unappropriate and rude.

I made this for a Super Bowl snack, which was a hit. Unfortunately everyone had hit the store shelves before me, so there were no miniature hot dogs left. Instead, I cut up regular hot dogs into snack size bites. which worked well. I also added a cup of grape jelly to take the edge off the "spiceness" of the recipe, and left off the chili sauce all together. Everyone loved it!!

I haven't made this recipe but the ingredients sound good. I have to agree though that the recipe instructions are incomplete. When writing a recipe you have to assume that not everyone is an experienced cook. Now, I am an experienced cook and have written recipes myself, for my family. When a recipe is one where a bit of "construction" is needed, as the picture shows, then yes, instructions for that are needed. It might be obvious to some but if you placed the ingredients in the slow cooker as the instructions say, you would not get a dish that looks like the one shown in the photo. This is simply just a matter of mis-communication on the part of the recipe author and no reflection on their cooking skills. Thanks for sharing the recipe and it is one that I shall definitely be trying!

First, no one should get upset with someone if they do not understand the directions. That is why we have the comment sections. I also questioned if the recipe was incomplete, but tried it anyway. The appetizer was a hit the first time I made it; however, most would like for it to be hotter. I will add some more spice the next time I make.

What a great idea, adding the pepperoni added great flavor. My new game day favorite.

Why do people even bother to comment when they obviously can't bother with actually rating recipes. If they can't even understand how to do that, how can they possibly understand how to read a recipe? If you would bother to read the comment by the submitter you would see that she said to serve with fancy picks. You can also see the picks in the picture! Quit picking apart recipes for your own inadequacy.

These are astounding. I would make them again anytime.

it astounds me at how difficult people try to make these recipes... this is absolutely straightforward! put all ingredients in the pot... and cook... and enjoy... if YOU want to tweak the sauce... go for it...but don't add any "anxious" thoughts... it's easy... and will go over great at any party or group... guys especially like the hearty appetizers... it's not "foo foo"... just easy..recognizable and fun!! enjoy!!

This sounds good..directions are incomplete..does everyone just pick out the 3 ingredients and make there own????

For eray: I thought this was to review this particular recipes. Not to give a recipes of something completely different...what gives?

Please discard the review by Sweet_Carol - "The directions left out some steps, like wrapping meatball around the hot dog and slitting a little x in the pepperoni to put through the dog." There are no missing directions, she just misunderstood the photo. It's showing a meatball, pepperoni slice and a mini dog/sausage on a skewer, not a sausage piercing the pepperoni and embedded in the meatball.

The directions left out some steps, like wrapping meatball around the hot dog and slitting a little x in the pepperoni to put through the dog. Other than that looks good. I fugure have to be careful on how you get them out of the pan to keep it together. I have also seen a jar of grape jelly and a jar of Chili Sauce put together for a great sweedish meatball so could do that here as well I am sure. Sounds strange but was good.

This recipe was excellent. I used Sweet Baby Ray's Barbecue Sauce. I served it as an appetizer at a birthday dinner directly from the Crockpot with a slotted spoon. I bought a package of small plastic forks and small paper plates and did not mess with the frilled toothpicks.

This is a great Idea for super bowl. I always make a crock pot of chili and one of soup. This will go in a third pot. I will have brown rice for the chili it will go well with this as well GREAT THANKS annexe3

I would suggest to take something else.  This app will need to stay heated and take up space.  I would suggest maybe crab filled endive leaves.  You can make them at home, put them on a platter and pass at the table or pass before the meal. They are really very good and VERY easy to make.

Reviewed on Dec. 19, 2008 by ekslattery

Do you join them with toothpicks before cooking or just throw it all in there? This sounds really good and easy, but I'm looking for an app. that I can just walk in with. I'm attending a party and the host is cooking a full sit-down for a hefty group. I don't want to take up any more space in the kitchen;)
