Melted Witch Puddles Recipe
  • Prep: 1 hour + chilling
  • Yield: 36 Servings
60 60

Ingredients

  • 1 teaspoon water
  • 4 drops yellow food coloring
  • 1-1/2 cups flaked coconut
  • 2 cups (12 ounces) semisweet chocolate chips
  • 6 tablespoons shortening, divided
  • 36 chocolate cream-filled chocolate sandwich cookies
  • 36 Bugles
  • 4 cups vanilla or white chips
  • 36 pretzel sticks

Directions

  • In a large resealable plastic bag, combine water and food coloring; add coconut. Seal bag and shake to tint coconut; set aside. In a microwave, melt chocolate chips and 2 tablespoons shortening; stir until smooth.
  • For witches' hats, place about 1/3 cup chocolate mixture in a resealable plastic bag; cut a small hole in a corner of bag. Pipe a small amount of chocolate on a cookie. Dip a Bugle in some of the remaining chocolate; allow excess to drip off. Position over chocolate on cookie, forming a witch's hat. Set on waxed paper to dry. Repeat with remaining chocolate, Bugles and cookies.
  • For puddles, melt vanilla chips and the remaining shortening; stir until smooth. Place mixture in a large heavy-duty resealable plastic bag; cut a small hole in a corner of bag. Pipe mixture into the shape of a puddle onto waxed paper-lined baking sheets.
  • Immediately place a witch's hat on the puddle. Place a pretzel stick alongside the hat; sprinkle reserved tinted coconut at the end of the pretzel stick. Repeat with remaining puddles, hats and brooms. Chill for 15 minutes or until set. Store in an airtight container. Yield: 3 dozen.

I tried this recipe tonight. I finally gave up after covering my self and everything else with chocolate, but hats still would not stay put, I tried toothpicks, allowing it to set so more sticky still the same. It may have been the bugles. I picked thru and found all the intact ones (approximately 30 in one bag). Even then they were all uneven on the bottom and would not attach. To me these were not easy. My husband was happy I used the melted chocolate over his ice cream.

These were the Hit of the Party!! I used "Grasshopper Cookies" for the bottom of the hat. Better fit than the oreo. I was able to make 2 dozen in less than an hour. trick to covering the Bugle is to use a tooth pick. I also tinted the chco. with green food color. Thanks this was a great recipe.

Made some last night to hand out to clients today- these were easy to make and fun! Instead of sandwich cookies, I used larger flat plain cookies (I chose Maria's). I think the hat proportion looks better this way. Holding the middle of the cookie, I dipped the edges into the melted chocolate then set them onto parchment. I then used a spoon to smooth in the chocolate on top then put the dipped Bugle on. I used white and green Candy Melts (a Wilton product, bought at Michael's craft store or a cake supply store) and used a ratio of about 2/3 green, 1/3 white- doesn't have to be exact. Melted them in a bowl using the microwave and just used a spoon to form the puddles. This was such a great idea, thank you!

I covered the oreos with melted chocolate as well. I didn't think the 'hat' was immediately recognizable as a hat at first view otherwise.

Even with the recipe a little jumbled up there is nothing to this! I wish I still had little kids at home to make these with. They look like so much fun. I only gave it 4 stars since I have not made the recipe but it sounds like all ingredients kids love and really simple to do.

I tinted the white slightly green since the witch on The Wizard of Oz was green. Great idea!

This idea is so creative! The recipe may sound a little mixed up, but the details are all there and understandable. We are going to really enjoy making these! This idea totally ROCKS!

We apologize for a slight error in the directions. The 3rd step should read, "For puddles, melt vanilla chips and the remaining shortening; stir until smooth. Place mixture in a large heavy-duty resealable plastic bag; cut a small hole in a corner of bag."

It will be corrected and updated here soon.
