Marbled Greeting Cookies Recipe
  • Prep: 20 min. + chilling Bake: 10 min./batch + cooling
  • Yield: 24 Servings
20 10 30

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup butter, softened
  • 1/3 cup shortening
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1/3 cup sour cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2-1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • Red and green food coloring
  • 1 tube white decorating gel

Directions

  • In a large bowl, cream the butter, shortening and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in egg, sour cream and vanilla. Combine the flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt; gradually add to creamed mixture and mix well.
  • Divide dough into thirds. Tint one portion red and one portion green; leave one portion plain. Wrap in plastic wrap; chill for 30 minutes or until easy to handle.
  • Drop dough by tablespoonfuls, randomly alternating colors, onto a lightly floured surface. Press together, forming a 13-in. x 4-1/2-in. rectangle. Roll out dough to 1/4-in. thickness, forming a 15-in. x 8-in. rectangle. Using a fluted pastry wheel, cut dough in half lengthwise. Cut each half into 12 strips measuring 4 in. x 1-1/4 in.
  • Place 2 in. apart on ungreased baking sheets. Bake at 375° for 10-12 minutes or until set. Cool for 2 minutes before removing to wire racks to cool completely. Use decorating gel to write greetings on cookies. Yield: 2 dozen.

I used the recipe to make cutout sugar cookies. I did everything that the recipe called for except used rolled them and used them for cutout instead of make these designs wiith messages. They tasted wonderful and my 2 year old had a blast making them too!

I changed it... I added 1/2 c finely chopped walnuts, then I just layered the 3 colors in a bread tin and set it up in the fridge for a bit. then I just cut thru them and they ended up with 3 nice striped of colors. Looks and tastes great!

This dough was so sticky, even after refrigerating over night, that I could not roll them out. I followed the directions exactly, but the dough was impossible to work with. I ended up throwing out the whole batch of cookie dough. What a waste.

I haven't made these yet, but could see myself making them red white and blue for the fourth of July, in pastel colors for easter, or orange, white, and black for Halloween. Words would go along with the holiday theme.
