An Irish meal wouldn't be complete without a lovely loaf of Irish Soda Bread. This recipe makes a beautiful high loaf of bread dotted with sweet raisins. It doesn't last long at our house this time of year. —Gloria Warczak, Cedarburg, Wisconsin

Terrible! The oven temp is too high so that at the end of the stated baking time the outside is lovely golden but the inside is still runny. Very dry and bland with a grainy texture. The picture shows about 3 times the raisins that the recipe calls for.

Very disappointing. I made it exactly as directed, but it came out burnt all around the outside and totally doughy in the center. My oven is fine for everything else, so I don't think that was the problem. The bread also oozed butter all over the pan while it baked. I would never make this again.

Our bread came out looking perfect but gooey on the inside, I had to put it in for an additional 10 minutes after slicing it for it to be done. When it came out, it was kind of a cross between a scone and heavy biscotti in texture. After reading about soda bread, we probably kneaded it too much ( I helped my 6 year old make this and she insisted on kneading). It was an interesting experience but I think maybe next time we'll try the Easy Soda Bread recipe.

Very bland in my opinion. Could have used a little more sugar or some spices to help give it a kick. I also substituted the raisins for chocolate chips which ended up being the best part.

Wonderful and easy. I added 2/3 cup raisins and 1/3 cup dried cranberries. It was yummy.

Both my guest and I loved this bread. I ended up substituting white sugar for brown (all I had on hand), and put in 2/3 cup of raisins and 1/3 cup dried cranberries. It was great with my corned beef and cabbage dinner!h

Don't let the picture mislead you, though ... it shows probably 2 c. of raisins, not the 1/3 c. called for in the recipe!

this was one of several loaves i made for st patrick's day and it was one of the best. the egg wash really gives it a nice sheen and makes it look professional.

How silly of me! Of course, it's not a yeast bread. Please ignore my previous question. Lovely loaf!
REALLY, you only have to knead this one minute? How coarse is the crumb texture?Did others only knead it that quick? Thanks in advance.

With the day off from school, my 15 year old daughter wanted to make dinner ALL BY HERSELF! She searched through tons of recipes and came up with a Chicken/Potato Soup, this Irish Soda Bread, and a Chocolate Chip Cookie made in a iron skillet with warm caramel sauce. It was all yummy! She was so proud because her big brother had a second helping! I can't wait for her next day off!

This bread was so simple yet delicious. I made it for St Patty's day and it was a big hit. Left over bread was great the next morning with tea. I changed to 1/2 C raisins . Next time I will add a whole cup.

So simple, quick and yummy! Made 3 loaves for friends and 1 for myself. Definitely a keeper.

Made a beautiful high loaf. Crusty on the outside and soft on the inside. Great warmed up the next morning for breakfast.

I made this for St. Patrick's Day dinner. It was very easy to make & turned out well. However, this is just not our "cup of tea" so to speak. Maybe our problem is that we're not Irish.

This bread was so delicious, and ridiculously easy to make. Based on the comments, I figured it wouldn't have enough raisins, so I used 1/2 c. raisins and 1/2 cranberries. Oh, and I forgot about it in the oven, so it was probably in there for more than 40 minutes, but the crust was gorgeous, and the inside was just slightly undone, so it worked out well.

Delicious recipe! However, do not make this recipe BEFORE you are going to serve it--I did, and because it was soo good, it was devoured-and so I am going to have to make it again for tonite's dinner! In place of buttemilk, i used "the cultured Buttermilk Blend" (found in grocery stores) and 1 cup of raisins intead of 1/3 cup, and also added 1 teaspoon of caraway seeds.

This was the first time we had soda bread and enjoyed it. I left out the raisins because we had it with dinner but next time will definetely try it with.

Best soda bread I've made in years. I added more raisins, but other than that, it was delicious.

Excellent soda bread! My Irish husband (who's usually not a huge fan of soda bread) loves it...says it's better than some of bread you get at home. I didn't have buttermilk, so substituted milk + vinegar, which worked out fine. And doubled the amount of raisins. This recipe will become a staple in our house, I predict.

Great bread. Not nearly as many raisins as the picture though. I may add more next time.

My family loves this soda bread I've been making it for years. The only thing I change is dried cranberry's instead of raisins as my children won't eat the raisins but they like the cranberry's
