Home-Style Stew Recipe

Ingredients

  • 2 packages (16 ounces each) frozen vegetables for stew
  • 1-1/2 pounds beef stew meat, cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 1 can (10-3/4 ounces) condensed cream of mushroom soup, undiluted
  • 1 can (10-3/4 ounces) condensed tomato soup, undiluted
  • 1 envelope reduced-sodium onion soup mix

Directions

  • Place vegetables in a 5-qt. slow cooker. In a large nonstick skillet coated with cooking spray, brown beef on all sides.
  • Transfer to slow cooker. Combine the remaining ingredients; pour over top.
  • Cover and cook on low for 6-8 hours or until beef is tender. Yield: 5 servings.

Nutritional Facts 1-1/2 cups equals 415 calories, 13 g fat (4 g saturated fat), 87 mg cholesterol, 1,205 mg sodium, 41 g carbohydrate, 2 g fiber, 30 g protein.

It was slightly more tomatoey than I like my stews to be. I think if I put in a can of diced or stewed tomatoes instead of tomato soup that will help. Otherwise, this is a wonderful, warm and hearty recipe!

I made this tonight and my husband and I both really enjoyed it. I used low-sodium products where possible. I did not bother with browning the beef 1st, and it was just fine. I prefer if I do not have to cook the food before putting it in the crock pot! I will definitely make this one again.

I agree with Summy and BBreslow and anyone else who commented likewise regarding sodium. You can get reduced or no sodium substitutes for the soups. I for one do not use salt but that didn't stop me from making this wonderful recipe. Just used reduced sodium soups. It's not like your eating this every day. Thanks for the recipe Marie.

Absolutely wonderful, Thanks so much for sharing. As for the sodium content.....lets just say I allowed (didn't really have a choice) all my teenage boys thirds. But then again, my boys still drink out of the water hose!!! :-P

I will be making this recipe this week and I do need to watch my sodium intake. For all the salt police out there, the recipe has five ingredients, two of which contain little to no sodium. Of the other three, all of them are available in low or no sodium versions.

Please refrain from bashing the posters and users of recipes that may not have ideal levels of sodium, cholesterol, fat, or whatever. The only thing required for healthy eating is balance. If you have three portions of this every day for a month, probably not a good thing, but for a meal once or twice a month you are certainly not hurting anything if you maintain a balanced diet.

Thank you so much for sharing such an easy and quick recipe. Just what I need! Please folks, stop trying to advise me about how much salt to eat or what I should and should not feed my children. Just say "thanks for sharing", or better yet, say nothing at all if you don't "approve".

I love this stew :) if it goes in the crock pot its for me been using the crockpot for 40 years i had one of the first ones loved it from day one but i read the commentaries pros and cons and can see yes the sodium is excessively high is this a typo ? This delish recipe (if not a typo ) has 3 x the sodium as potato chips . I think you guys and gals who were bashing the salt police were a little too extreme they have every right to voice there opinion as well as you and they are right like i said unless its a typo this is pretty hefty sodium we are talking here I myself didnt even think to look till I saw everyone making such a big hopty do about it :) Sometimes good does come out of bad :)

I fully intend to try this recipe. I do agree with several of these people too, that instead of being negative, perhaps offer a solution?? Or better yet, go elsewhere where they have salt reduced recipes. I'm sure there are websites out there. For me.. i'm absolutely going to try this. The picture alone makes my mouth water.
