Personally, I think you could try about any combination you want. This is what I did with the roast beef and rye bread loaf. But for best results, I would stick with a bread that is light and airy instead of a dense and heavy bread. I don't think it would cut up as nice as the recipe calls for and fall apart easily to where you can put the ingredients in between all the nooks and crannies of the slices. I think you could use any shape whether it be round or rectangular. This bread is best eaten immediately while warm. It doesn't taste as good when it's left at room temperature for awhile in my opinion. Make sure you keep it covered in foil while baking. It does burn on top easily if you don't.

I have not tried this yet. Would a sour dough bread and sharp cheddar work? I just do not like the Hawaiian bread.

I take this bread to church for our Wed. night Bible study and I get many raves over it. I add small diced ham to the ingredients. I also cut back on the garlic a little as we don't like a lot of garlic. It's an easy and wonderful recipe to make. I also make another version with a round rye bread and use chopped deli roast beef with swiss cheese. Some people liked that version better.

I thought I lost this recipe...whew, then I remembered I could look it up. It is a winner. It is easy and is simply an amazing appetizer! Try it!

I make this every time I have company and always get rave reviews. Mine does not look as pretty as the bread in the picture, but it tastes fabulous. I lift the foil toward the end of baking to make sure it crisps up. This is a go-to recipe to impress company, family and friends.
