I also used a pound and a half of lean ground beef instead of just one pound. (See other review.)
My husband thought this was awesome! The only change I made was to slice and saute fresh mushrooms because that was what I had on hand. Delicious!

What I did:Used about 1 1/2 lbs of beef, mixed it really really well with my hands so that it was almost stretchy like.I also used mini bella's, fresh, wholeUsed soy sauce instead of worchestershireIt also says to bring to a boil and let thicken...well it instantly turns to thick gravy, lol so i put in the mushrooms and put the patties back in with the gravy, set on low/simmer with the lid on for about 10 mins. So far ive made this about a dozen times and each time comes out great! Made redskin mashed pots. Left skins on when boiling for maximum nutrition :D nom nom nom

<p>Instead of making hamburger steaks I made a meat loaf. I eliminated the soup mixture and used a packet of mushroom gravy mix instead. I also added an egg, since I was making a meatloaf. I made the gravy with fresh mushrooms and some chopped onion. It turned out wonderful. Best meat loaf I have ever made. Next time I'll make hamburger steaks.</p>

My husband has been complaining about all the new dishes lately. He not one for change. This dish I followed the suggestion of others and used a big jar of savory beef gravy. Bought fresh, thick sliced mushrooms. I sliced a half of an onion into rings and cooked the onion rings and mushrooms in butter in another skillet as the hamburger steaks cooked up. When the hamburger steaks were done, I added the jar of gravy, the remaining onion soup and add the onions and mushrooms. My husband could not believe how good it was. He said "this is a keeper." Can't wait to fix it on other members of the family when they come to visit.

Being from the south, I made a roux, added a packet of McCormick Onion Gravy Mix to the roux and made the gravy. I then added the meat mixture to the gravy mix and simmered about 20 minutes. I also saute'd onion rings in butter,a splash of olive oil, salt and pepper until slightly browned. For serving, I plated the meat mixture, gravy and sauted onions, added mashed potatoes and a fresh steamed veggie. Very good.

I just used packaged brown gravy mix ..and i liked that w/out the soup mixture..definitely with the fresh mushrooms..and an extra splash of worsteshire sauce..i also put dill chips on the tops of the patties close to the end of cooking and it really made it feel like cafeteria chopped steak..i also think it would be good..with au juice instead of gravy

I really enjoyed this recipe. When I made it the first time I used jar mushroom didn't like the taste. The second time I used fresh mushroom it tasted better.
