I thought this recipe was just great. I like granola bars, but I am not the greatest fan of the bought one. I am going to be sharing this recipe with my daughter, for my grandchildren, and with my soon to be daughter-in-law.

These bars are really good and filling. My sister tired one when she was at the house and asked for the recipe. They are a really good grab and go snack.

My son love these. I could not find driedapples so I used raisins. I used choppedwalnuts instead of almonds. I have made these twice and found if you do not let them cool completely they will crumble when cutting them. Also after I cut themI put them in the freezer. When I take agranola bar out of the frezer I warm it in themicrowave for 15 seconds and it tastes sogood.

These granola bars are delicious! I added more fruit to make them even better.

These bars were quite crumbly, but I am eating them anyway because they are so healthy! Right now I am enjoying them crumbled over vanilla-flavored Greek yogurt. I made them sugar-free so that might be part of the reason for their crumbly consistency. Next time I will use the brown sugar and use less coconut. My coconut was extremely fine, and 1/2 cup was a bit much. Love the sunflower seeds!

Solution to crumbly bars - quick cooking oats, like the recipe says! And remember people, these are granola bars and are not going to stick together in a solid mass like a doughy cake bar, or a bought granola bar. These are fabulous, lots of flavour and you can omit or add just about any filling ingredient you want!

I had the same problem as others. They tasted great but didn't stay together at all. I will try the quick oats next time. On the bright side - it tastes great over yogurt!

What did I do wrong?? I couldn't get them to stay together! They taste great as granola but I couldn't take them along as a bar! Is an ingredient missing from the recipe as printed?? I firmly pressed them in the pan and baked them at 350 for 18 mins.

So that makes them 17 cents each, around the cost of manufactured granola bars and much healthier and tastier! (sorry for the double posting and misspelling - I don't know how to edit comments...)
Very tasty. Because they're chewy, my kids with braces are able to have them, too.Regarding expense, by buying everything bulk (exceptin, I calculate a recipe of these is about 6 ddollars.

Another suggestion for the person who was concerned about the expense. Out on the West Coast we have a supermarket chain called Winco. They have great prices on just about any flour, cereal, or dehydrated fruit you could sell from a bin. If you live in CA, WA, NV, OR or ID you might have one nearby.

I made this recipe today for the first time. The bars are excellent. I followed the recipe exactly and had no problem at all with the bars crumbling when I sliced them. My husband sampled one and said they are as good as his favorite granola commercially available bar which is the "Seattle's Favorite Granola Nut Bar". I will definitely be making these again. We dry our own apples every fall and I had some left so I was able to use our own apples.

Great recipe !! I might suggest if you feel the ingredients are pricey, that you find a Sprouts store or other health oriented store that sells these items in bulk. then you can buy only what you need and have a large selection of items to add .

Question--can I dry fresh cranberries easily?
Reviewed on Aug. 27, 2012 by Ohio46
I did not make these although thye look and sound delicious. The deterrent for me was the expense of the ingredients. Almonds, cranberries, sunflower seeds, and honey all contribute to making these budget prohibitive for me and I would guess many others.

Absolutely delicious! Will definitely make them again and try different fruits and nuts in them.

Five stars for this granola bar recipe. I have made these multiple times. I have never had these granola bars crumble. If we are out of these granola bars, my family begs for more. I use slivered almonds, chop up the dried cranberries and dried apples. I mix up the coconut, almonds, sunflower seeds, and dried fruits. This makes sure the cranberries are not clumping together. I add the ingredients in this order:melted butter, honey, vanilla extract, brown sugar, cinnamon and then the egg. Next, I add all the dry ingredients except for the oat mixture. I mix this until well incorporated. Last, I add the oat mixture. I firmly press them in the pan with a metal spatula. The granola bars come out perfect every time. I cut the bars when cooled and place on waxed paper in a plastic container with a lid. I store the bars in the refrigerator.

I'm sorry to hear some of you have had a problem with these bars being too crumbly. As a result, we retested the recipe in our test kitchen. We pressed the mixture firmly into the pan before baking, let them cool completely in the pan before cutting and did not have a problem with them being crumbly. We did try to cut them while they were still warm to see if they would cut better, and the bars were too soft/sticky to cut. There was some slight crumbling when cut near a larger piece of almond or dried fruit, but it was expected. If you are still having problems, make sure you are using quick-cooking oats (not old-fashioned), cut the mix-ins smaller and be sure to press the mixture firmly into the pan.Sincerely,Peggy Woodward, RDFood EditorHealthy Cooking

These were very flavorful, but like the other reviewers mentioned, very crumbly. Easy recipe and makes a lot of granola. I would make it again and experiment with different ingredients next time.

These granola bars were fantastic! Yes, they did crumble (especially the middle ones) but the flavor is SO good that who cares? They were perfect after-school snacks and my whole family loved them! I used chopped dried cherries in mine b/c I didn't have apples and cranberries.

I made this and it didn't crumble at all. I used a pampered chef stoneware pan though, so don't know if that makes a difference. Next time I would add more dried apple and a bit less sunflower seeds as their flavor was a little strong.

I also had the crumbling problem, but they're so good that I can live with it! I'll try the tips suggested here (not baking as long & cutting while still warm) and see what happens!

Made it twice now and I'm making it again today! First time I cooked it a little too long and the bars crumbled. Second time I pressed them in the pan a little better and didn't cook them quite as long and they stayed together perfectly! One thing though, make sure they're completely cooled before separating them with wax paper. The wax paper stuck to my bars!Overall: Delicious! Both thumbs up!!

wonder if you could use this same recipe but instead of the fruits, coconut and kernals, add some chocolate chips and maybe even melt a lil peanut butter in the mixture or use peanut butter chips? it may even help them stick together a lil more. i might experiment!

Love, Love, love the taste of these granola bars. For some reason the ones I made did not "stick" together. I baked them the full amount of time. I will try them again and maybe press them into the pan a little more vigorously. The neighborhood kids loved the granola pieces though!
