These soft and chewy cookies couldn’t be easier to make. Jazz them up with a chocolate kiss in the center, or substitute a different flavor of cake mix. —Angela Bailey, San Pierre, Indiana

VERY GOOD WITH A LEMON CAKE MIX. yOU CAN USE ANY FLAVOR YOU WISH AND ROLL IN POWDERED SUGAR.

I followed the recipe with a "regular" Devil's Food cake mix (15.25 oz) and they turned out great. I did add 1/2 cup of Hershey's mini chips which gave them an extra punch. Almost like eating a bite size brownie! Yummy--we love them and they are SO EASY which is a BIG plus! We'll be making these again!

I have made this recipe a few times now and they are so good. I will try with a brownie mix next time as suggested by previous post. I usually use milk chocolate cake mix.

I was going to make this recipe and had all ingredients except the chocolate cake mix. I did have a box of brownie mix, so I used that and the cookies were DELICIOUS! My husband said they were the best cookies I've ever made, even better than Toll-House cookies. To be fair to the recipe, the next batch I used chocolate cake mix. They were good, but not as good as with the brownie mix. I love the simplicity of this recipe and have made several batches, and will continue to make more.

My 8 yr old and I mad this with carrot cake mix, 1/4 C chopped raisins, 1/4 C chopped walnuts and we used Smart Balance instead of butter. The lack of butter made a big difference. We only got 44 cookies instead of 54 and they didn't spread. The taste is AMAZING, though. I would definitely make these again. Very easy, too. Thanks.

This is absolutely delicious, as stated. I didn't have any trouble with recipe. I have handed out the recipe to others who have asked for it. Yummy, and I highly recommend.

I have been making the recipe forever. We call the Gooey butter cookies, like the cake a STL favorite. I use chocolate or yellow cake mix. I make them in the morning and bake them in the afternoon. But rolling them in powder sugar is a must. Sooo good

These cookies were very easy to make and moist and chewy as stated but for those who love chocolate they could have used some choco chips or peanut butter chips or even perhaps toffee bits to give a little more flavor. Next time I will add something additional.

Cake mixes have different weights now days. You must use the 18 1/4 oz. box of mix. Then they shouldn't be sticky.

i haven't made them yet but i wanted to know, is it 18 ounces or 1/4 ounces for the cake mix?

  • 1 package (18-1/4 ounces) chocolate cake mix

This refers to one 18.25 ounce cake mix.

I was disappointed in these cookies. they were very bland, not much taste to them at all.

Reviewed on Sep. 13, 2010 by mobiledeb

I do not know if it was the cake mix I used but these were one of the worst cookies I have ever made 8( The cooking time for me was closer 13 minutes so the first two pans were thrown away. Even my chocolate loving friends were disappointed. Oh yeah, the mess of putting them on cokkie sheets was even worse than the taste and texture. Definitely not a keeper.

This is Paula Deens recipe. I have been making these for ever..It says it's a prize winning recipe..did it go to Paula?

Reviewed on Aug. 31, 2010 by letseat2

Paula Deen made this recipe on one of her shows a while back except after the dough has been formed into balls, she rolls them in powdered sugar. When I make them I also add mini chocolate chips. Who wouldn't want a little extra chocolate surprise in their cookie?

Reviewed on Aug. 31, 2010 by desireecm

i see people have issues with the stickiness of the batter. There is a step this is missing when you roll the cookie balls out have powdered sugar on your hands first therefore coating the cookie in powdered sugar. i make these all the time and i never even chill them first

I love this recipe. I had no troubles with it after chilling in the fridge overnight. Like another reader, I flattened my cookies before baking and my son added Reeses Pieces to make faces. It was a fun project.

Couldn't be easier, and very tasty! I often make several different flavors using different cake mixes and bring them to parties or potlucks.

These are excellent!! The kids absolutely love these cookies. I added semi-sweet chocolate chips to this recipe and put the dough in the freezer for 1 hour. I also flattened the cookie dough with the palm of my hand before baking. These are simple to make. No fuss at all after putting them in the freezer.

Simple and good. Put some frosting in between two of these for a whoopie pie.

easy---use different flavored cake mixes. I used the new 50% less sugar cake mixes, added sugar free chips and fat free cream cheese for my diabetic husband. He loves them to say the least!!!

I picked this recipe based on the fact it has 5 ingredients and I wanted something simple to make a large amount of cookies for my sons teachers. It is very hard to mix and I wound up having to make the dough one day and cook them the next due to the 2 hour chilling. This is not a recipe you can make in an evening. Even after chilling over night the dough is still too sticky to work with. There is NO way you can touch this stuff with your hands. I even tried a small cookie dough scoop sprayed with pam and that didn't work.I have just pulled my first 2 pans of cookies out of the oven after 10 minutes of bake time, they do not look done and can not be baked further as the bottoms are burning. I saw the first review was very positive in that this recipe was very easy. This has not been my experience and I am no dummy in the kitchen. I am a retired chef and can cook mostly anything. I have lowered the oven temp to 300' and will start checking them at 6 minutes. I DO NOT reccomend this recipe. It is very unreliable.

These cookies are so easy to make. Placed a chocolate kiss on top and everyone commented how good they were at our church fellowship. Carolkoff

Taste great. However the preparation was not worth it. The two hours in the fridge didn't do much to keep the dough from being unbearably sticky. Needed to cook much longer than said time. Still good, but should be called STICKY GOOEY chocolate cookies.

Reviewed on Sep. 01, 2009 by jandicksh@yahoo.com

These cookies have a great taste. I followed the recipe but they needed to cook much longer than 'when cracked'.... may be done but still wet and soft.
