My state is well known for growing good peaches. This delicious recipe has been a family favorite for almost 50 years.

SERVINGS: 30

CATEGORY: Lower Fat

METHOD: Freezer

TIME: Prep: 20 min. + freezing Cook: 15 min. + chilling

Ingredients:

  • 1 quart milk
  • 2-1/4 cups sugar, divided
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 4 eggs, lightly beaten
  • 2 cans (14 ounces each) sweetened condensed milk
  • 1-3/4 pounds fresh peaches, peeled and sliced

Directions:

In a large heavy saucepan, heat milk to 175°; stir in 1 cup sugar and salt until dissolved. Whisk in a small amount of the hot mixture to the eggs. Return all to the pan, whisking constantly. Cook and stir over low heat until mixture reaches at least 160° and coats the back of a metal spoon. Remove from the heat.
Cool quickly by placing pan in a bowl of ice water; stir for 2 minutes. Stir in sweetened condensed milk. Press plastic wrap onto surface of custard. Refrigerate for several hours or overnight.
When ready to freeze, mash peaches with remaining sugar in a small bowl; let stand for 30 minutes. Combine milk mixture and peaches in an ice cream freezer. Freeze according to manufacturer's directions. Yield: 3-3/4 quarts.
