4 large white or yellow onions, thinly sliced 1/4 cup butter or margarine, divided 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon pepper 1 can (10-1/2 ounces) condensed beef consomme, undiluted 1/4 cup cooking sherry, optional 4 slices French bread (1 inch thick) 1 cup (4 ounces) shredded Swiss cheese 1/4 cup shredded Parmesan cheese
