My grandma served these sandwiches every time I visited, and when I had children of my own, I made these sandwiches. My grandchildren enjoy it now, too. It's an inexpensive recipe to make, so it's great for a party. —Patricia Pidgeon, Sycamore, Illinois

Quick Homemade CroutonsI hate to waste the heel from a loaf of bread or a few leftover hot dog or hamburger buns. So I cube them into a bowl, spray them with nonstick cooking spray and season with garlic powder, parsley and basil or oregano. Then I bake them on a cookie sheet at 250° until they’re crisp and brown. My family loves the quick homemade croutons. —Nancy C., Windermere, Florida

My mother's sloppy joe recipe is the best one I've ever eaten: Brown 1 lb ground beef with 1/2 cup chopped onions. Drain off fat and add 1 cup catsup, 2 Tbsp. brown sugar, 2 Tbsp. cider vinegar, 1 tsp. yellow mustard, dash garlic powder, and a dash of Tabasco sauce. Simmer 20 minutes and serve on buns with cole slaw.

reduced brown sugar and relish, added one teaspon prepared mustard. Great, will make again and again. The relish is what I missed in my original recipe. Deliscious. Thanks

way to much brown sugar, and to much relish, I used half of each and it was on the boarder. Might even use less next time

There must be a typo here. I'm sure you mean chili sauce instead of sweet relish, and definitely less sugar. I won't waste the ingredients to make this version.

I've been using similar ingredients for sloppy joes--hamburger, onion, green pepper, ketchup and a little brown sugar--for years, but 1/2 c. brown sugar and 3/4 c. sweet pickle relish to just one pound of ground beef sound awfully sweet. Has anyone tested this recipe?

That's a lot of sugar, b/c the catsup and sweet relish also have sugar. I would eliminate the catsup and sugar and use 12 oz tomato sauce. If it is not sweet enough for your taste, add 2 Tbsp brown sugar.
That is a lot of sugar in the recipe, since the sweet relish and catsup also have sugar. I eliminate the catsup and substitute tomato sauce, add a Tablespoon Worcestershire sauce, a bell pepper and 2 celery ribs, and use about 2 Tbsp brown sugar.
