Moist and scrumptious, these scones come out perfect every time. I savor the chewy dried cranberries and sweet orange glaze. There's nothing better than serving these remarkable scones warm with the delicate orange butter.

  • 10 teaspoons sugar, divided
  • 1 tablespoon grated orange peel
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/3 cup cold butter
  • 1 cup dried cranberries
  • 1/4 cup orange juice
  • 1/4 cup half-and-half cream
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tablespoon milk
  • GLAZE (optional):

  • 1 tablespoon orange juice
  • ORANGE BUTTER:
  • 1/2 cup butter, softened
  • 2 to 3 tablespoons orange marmalade

Directions

  • In a large bowl, combine the flour, 7 teaspoons sugar, orange peel, baking powder, salt and baking soda. Cut in butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs; set aside. I love scones and these came out perfect! Not too sweet and not dry or hard like many scones. Pefect warm or cold. I did not have 1/2 & 1/2 and for only 1/4 cup I wasn't going to buy it so I just used the milk I had on hand which was 1% and they were still great. I did add about 1/2 cup chopped pecans. I also let my cranberries soak in the orange juice before adding the rest of the wet ingredients to plump them some and so they wouldn't be too chewy. This is definitely a make again recipe for me!

This was my first attempt at making scones and am happy to say they came out awesome. According to my husband they were exceptional and better then any scones you would buy at the grocery bakery section or coffee joint. Extermely easy to make, I even used my Kitchen aide mixer on low speed which made them even easier to make. They came out moist and tender, wonderful orange flavor. Did not glaze them as it was not needed. Recipe will definietly become a regular in our house.

These were so good that I had to double the batch the second time I made them! We skip the orange butter altogether...the orange glaze alone is enough. They're delicious and very easy to whip up before work or school in the morning. A definite keeper!

Yummo! Search no more, this is the only scone recipe you'll ever need. Change up the cranberries to blueberries or black berries. Even use lemon zest, lemon juice and poppy seeds in place of orange and cranberries.
