Colorful Candy Bar Cookies Recipe

No one will guess these sweet treats with the candy bar center start with store-bought dough. Roll them in colored sugar…or just dip the tops for even faster assembly. Instead of using miniature candy bars, slice regular size Snickers candy bars into 1-inch pieces for the centers. —Taste of Home Test Kitchen

Mine did not make as many as the recipe said it would, but they did come out okay. Some leaked, but husband said it was just the caramel from the candy and it was tasty! A little time consuming, but worth it. Son put his in the microwave on the second day for about 10 second and boy, that them even better!

After reading some of the reviews, I was afraid I might be disappointed with the results on this cookie. Instead, I was quite happy. The cookie, though they didn't look round like the pictures, came out tasting quite good. I liked them even better the next day!

Good concept, but hard to get to work. Mine were flat. Candy oozed out. Were hard after a day or two.

These are great cookies and were a hit at the party I took them to. Thw picture is prior to baking so don't expect them to remain in a ball as they aren't supposed to. After reading the many reviews here of people having trouble I almost didn't make them but I'm glad I did. I used pillsbury box sugar cookie mix and added the extra flour noted in the recipe. The box says it makes 3 dozen cookies and that is pretty much what I got out of the recipe. To help prevent oozing I froze the candy and refrigerated the dough for 15 to 30 minutes. The cookies came out wonderful. My 4 year old loved rolling in the colored sugar which I made myself at home with foodcoloring to save some money. Definitely will make again to take to cookie exchanges or for an office party!

These turned out perfectly for me. I DID have to use a whole tube of cookie dough and doubled the flour. I made sure the cookie dough was a bit thicker when I wrapped them around the snickers bar to avoid them falling apart like a lot of the reviews said happened.

The first time I made them they flattened out but still tasted great. The second time I dropped them into a mini muffin tin before baking and the appearance was much better and everyone enjoyed them more. I will always use this method in the future. Just make sure you don't try to remove them from the pan until completely cool.

Mine, too, fell flat. I froze the candy. I added more flour. To no avail. However.. I was able to salvage them .. by cooling them on the parchment, not on a rack. As they cooled, the candy also firmed up, so it didn't leak! Very tasty even if not so pretty as the recipe's picture. Sure would love to know how to keep them round! Maybe it's the brand of cookie dough? I tried Pillsbury's .. both regular and the peppermint.. same results.

These would have been much better with a chocolate kiss or mini Dove in the middle. The Snicker makes them taste like a regular chunky peanut butter cookie to me. I used a whole tube of sugar cookie dough and 1/2 cup of flour, too much flour, dough way too dry. I had to squeeze dough together by hand to get it to stick. The snickers oozed out of mine, guess I didn't have enough cookie dough wrapped around - Not too bad tasting tho not something I will make again.

These were awesome! From some of the posts here I can see where I started with some similar problems. I used a scratch sugar cookie dough with extra flour. After forming a few balls I baked a test batch and found the dough needed more flour. Once I got the right dough consistency (make notes!) the cookie kept its shape perfectly! I used about a tablespoon of dough for each cookie and after wrapping the candy I rolled it in my hands to make them round. Once I got a system, I was able to bang these out with no problem. Will make these a regular in my Christmas baking!

I liked the simpleness of the cookie but could not figure out how to keep the cookies round like the picture showed.

Reviewed on Dec. 12, 2012 by Fran.Pa

I followed the recipe exactly but made a double batch since 1/2 a tube of cookie dough did not seem enough. The double recipe barely made 24 cookies. They were wonderful when fresh, but the next day they were as hard as a rock. I had made them for my daughter and her friends and they would not even eat them because they were so hard, I had to throw them away. Would like a version that would work better. I am going to try modify the recipe and see if I can make it work because I really did like these.

My mother-in-law calls these "Sin Cookies" ....they are so good, and the little that did leak out just made them even more ooooey-gooey!

I loved the idea of a candy filled cookie and it looked very easy to make. But I'm very disappointed they flattened out and looked nothing like the picture no matter what I tried. If there is a solution to the flattening out problem, I might try it again. But overall it was a waste of time making these.

I thought these would be great for shipping, but they were a disappointment. I was very careful, even testing oven temp when 1st try didn't turn out well. Cookies cracked, candy oozed. My husband, who loves cookies and snickers, rated this one a "don't bother making these again" failed experiment.

I just made these and I must say it was just about a failure. I'm not sure what went on, but they flattened out and the candy oozed. I was not impressed, but they did taste good however. I doubt I make them again, but I would like to know what I did wrong.

Made this for Christmas and used Pilsbury's Peppermint Sugar Cookie refrigerated dough for the holidays. They were a big hit with my family. Used different types of candy bars and cut them in half. The cookies flattened out, yet no candy leaked out. Will definitely be making these again.

I made the cookies again with almond joy and reese's cups. I used self rising flour again. I think that may help the candy from oozing because it didn't. I liked the reese's cup ones the best. I swirled hershey's chocolate syrup on them while they were still warm! They were pretty tasty!

I might try making these with malted balls (whoppers) and packaged sugar cookie dough. If they fall flat and the candy melts I'll let you know.

Basically these were blobs of dough with melted candy oozing out of them. They looked nothing like the picture. Tried using a different oven rack and added more cooking time. No luck. Tasted good, but I wouldn't serve them to anyone.

I used self rising flour because I didn't have the all purpose. They didn't fall flat, but they didn't look like the pretty little balls in the picture either. If you look closely @ the picture, they seem to be uncooked! I cut the candy bars in inch pieces, then quartered them because i had read the reviews already about the candy oozing. They did fine. I also used a utensil for cookie dough similare to a small ice cream scooper, so I only got 7 cookies, but they were delicious!

or maybe it's just me whose a complete idiot..

I'm sure you're not an idiot.  These recipes are all tested here in Taste of Home's Test Kitchen before they're sent out into the world and sometimes they don't quite work the same way for some reason.  I read tons of these reviews everyday and when I see a recipe like this that folks are struggling with I flag it & send it back to the Test Kitchen so they can run through it again.  It doesn't always get retested right away but generally they'll play with it and come back with notes to help home cooks like you through the rough spots!

Keep Cooking!

Tastes good, but went flat and the candy came out like other reviewers said. I only got 32 out of the full tube of dough. I have made this before with my own chocolate chip dough and they were fine. I think you just need to put more dough around them.

The problem with the directions is that it doesn't indicate how much dough you should use except 1/2 of a tube. I used 8 oz and they kept their shape. Everyone loved them. I used the mint candy bar like was suggested the dip those in the green sugar for those with peanut allergies.

I asked for requests for this year's Christmas baking and, independently, each person asked for these cookies (hubby, and two boys) plus excited inquiries from other mother's going to this year's cookie exchange, "You are going to make those candy bar cookies, right?". They are incredibly easy and are eaten quickly!

I used an extra amount of the cookie dough mixture to wrap each Snickers piece. This prevented them from becoming flat and i had no candy leak out. The down side is that since i used extra dough, it made less than the serving amount the recipe suggested. But they looked great and weren't flat!!!

These cookies were way too sweet. However, my daughter invented a different version of this cookie. She wrapped the cookie dough around a Hershey Candy Cane Kiss and shaped it into the same shape of the kiss, sprinkled it with regular sugar and it was very good. Tasted like a mint sugar cookie.
