My Amish aunt made dozens of these spicy red squares for holiday gatherings when I was a tot. I'd always look for them glowing among the other candies she'd carry in! Nowadays, I stir up her recipe for my family.

I couldn't find any cinnamon oil so I used cinnamon extract. I know it doesn't taste the same way it would have with the oil, but it is still surprisingly good and addictive. Be careful though, cuz I actually broke my tooth on a piece of it! The look of this candy is amazing!

This was great! It was my first try at making hard candy and I couldn't have asked for better results. Just wished my family had left me a little more. Wondering now where I can find some more cinnamon oil to make another batch. I debated on making the squares, but I did and everyone wondered how I did it. By the way I poured out candy onto a baking sheet covered with heavy foil and buttered, and it didn't stick together, so no need for powdered sugar. I think it is prettier this way. You just have to have a little patience making it, something I'm not good with, but boy was it worth it!

I made 1 lb. of this candy and gave some to family and friends. At christmas everyone asked for it,so I made 6 lbs. When I asked my mother-in-law what she wanted for her birthday now in January she said more hard candy, I sent her 3 lbs.. I that this will become a holiday tradition now.
