Due to the comments posted here, we have retested this recipe again. We agree the original bake time was too long and we apologize for the error. The time has been reduced to 9-11 minutes. For the filling, the recipe said to 'cool completely', but for best results it should be chilled in the refrigerator for about an hour. This allows for a thicker product when it's added to the shortening and butter. The end result should be light and fluffy.Taste of Home Test Kitchen

I shortened the bake time on the cookies so they were not as hard. I could not keep them from being flat as pancakes. My filling was not runny, actually thought it was good. I cooled the mix for a VERY long time. The instructions say mix the filling until fluffy, which will happen it just takes much longer than anticipated. Even still when you take a bite, it all comes out the sides of the cookie because the cookie is not soft or cake like enough.

The dough for the cookies was so sticky I could hardly work with it. Like another reviewer stated, it "ran" up the beaters and it was not fun to make. I did like the taste of the cookies, though, and thought using a cake mix made it simple. The filling tasted good but it is VERY thin. I put mine in the fridge for several hours but then had them sitting out for an hour and the filling spills out when you take a bite. I LOVED the flavor but it is very messy. I did not roll it in the mini chips as I thought that would be TOO much chocolate and a mess.My friends said I should have used the chocolate cookies with the peanut butter filing from the Go Bananas whoopie pies. Or they thought I should have frozen them and I do think that would be very tasty.

The cookies turned out fine, but the filling was way too runny and I'm not sure I like the flavor of it either.

I so wish I had read through the reviews BEFORE I started to make these. Sadly, I didn't check until I had problems with overly runny filling. Lesson learned - check before making something new!

I found the batter very very thick as was already noted. I added the required amount of water for the cake mix and a half cup of flour. I only baked the cookie part for 10 minutes on parchment paper lined baking sheets and they came out perfect. The filling was very runny. I added about half cup of powdered sugar (confectioner's sugar) to the filling and then refrigerated it before putting it on the cookies. They came decent. I may tweak it a bit if I make them again. For a recipe that was supposed to be tested by ToH this recipe needs a lot of tweaking to come out as it should.

My husband loves Whoopie Pies, so I was eager to make this recipe for Valentines day. I am VERY disappointed with this recipe (and I haven't finished making them yet)!!!First, when I put the cake ingredients in the mixer, the batter was very thick and sticky and running up the beaters. I found a similar recipe on another website which indicated that you should make the cake mix according to the directions and add 1/2-2/3 cups of flour. I added the water that mix called for along with the flour and the cakes seem to have turned out OK.I must agree with other reviewers that the filling is very runny. I am chilling it in the refridgerator in hopes that it will become spreadable.Of all the recipes I tried in my many years as a TOH subscriber, this is recipe was the biggest failure.

I agree, making them the exact way this recipe says is not as easy or good. I chilled the filling for at least an hour then made the pies and chilled them another hour. They were awesome!! Even better have they were in the fridge overnight!!

Agree with all above posts. Bake time is WAY too long, probably 8-10 min is plenty. A whoopie pie is meant to be soft and cake like...not hard and crunchy! Filling is ok if refrigerated overnight, too soft to make and serve cookies right away. Overall taste not bad, but would not make again, have much better recipes. Thought this would be quicker using cake mix, but very disappointed.

Wow, not good. The cookie was thin, hard and not that tasty. The filling had WAAY too much of a shortening taste -- tasted like mildly chocolate-flavored shortening. Will not make again. I should mention though, these were better (3 stars?) after refrigerating for a couple days because the cookie softened up.

These taste OK, but the cookies spread out too much and are too thin and the filling is kind of runny. I made some pumpkin whoopie pies for Thanksgiving that the cookies were much moister and thicker and the filling was fluffier.

Didn't care for the frosting..Way too much shortening and butter. Also, texture was not mousse-like. There wasn't much flavor, either. I don't think my family will care for these.

Overall the whoopie pie is pretty good. The cookie is good and the filling is pretty yummy. I was a little disappointed with the consistancy of the filling, it was a litte too thin and when you picked the cookie up to roll it in the choc bits it squeezed out the side quite a lot.
