This savory casserole is one of my husband's favorites. He loves the fluffy dumplings with plenty of gravy poured over them. The basil adds just the right touch of flavor and makes the whole house smell so good while this dish cooks. —Sue Mackey, Galesburg, Illinois

We loved this chicken dish. Easy to make, turned out perfect.

I liked this recipe but adding more flour, is best for the gravy, and I don't care for basil with this recipe so I used fresh thyme, it was delicious!

We did not care for this dish. The basil is overpowering and the peas become tremendously overcooked. If you really want to try this recipe, I suggest making the following alterations: cut the basil by half (both in the sauce and in the dumplings), eliminate the added salt (there's more than enough in the chicken broth), thaw the peas before adding them then toss them in with the chicken just before putting the dish in the oven, and eliminate the last 10 minutes of cooking. I personally won't bother trying this recipe again, because we've discovered a wealth of other recipes here on ToH that we adore!

Good recipe. Sauce is a little thin, but I add a little more flour and more chicken. Great recipe to use up leftover turkey, which is my favorite way to make it. I also use frozen peas and carrots or mixed veggies for more color. I doctor up the biscuits with a little garlic powder, some shredded cheese and a touch more milk. I tried the low fat biscuit mix once and didn't like it as well, too dry. Sometimes I'll add dried parsley if I'm out of dried basil.

This recipe turned out much better than I thought it would. I did add more onions, garlic and an extra 1/4 cup of flour like others suggested to thicken the sauce. I didn't have any celery, so I added carrots instead, which also added more color and taste. I will make this again!

Since my husband is not fond of bisquick, I used lasagna noodles and it was really good too.

I have to admit that I did change a thing or two. For starters I used BEEF!! My 3 guy's are beef men and this was the first time I ever made dumplings, so it was an experiment in itself!! I deleted the butter, and I put the whole thing in the crock pot. Instead of plain peas I used peas & carrots. I used 2lbs of tri-tip steaks that I had handy, which I cut into 1/2" cubes, and added 4 medium potatoes also cut into 1/2" cubes. Cooked it for 6 hours, and added the dumplings the last hour and a half into cooking time. It was a success! It did make the whole house smell great! Will definitely make again, maybe I will even try it with chicken?!?!

This is an excellent recipe. My husband and I look forward to making this with the left over roast chicken. Has an excellent flavour using the basil.

I always make from scratch biscuits with this recipe. I have served it for a company luncheon using leftover turkey, and it's more elegant than chicken. Love the basil smell when baking!

This is an oldie but goody. Started making this when it first came out. Put as many ingredients together as could, used canned chicken and made this for my parents and son on a camping vacation. It was a hit all around.Like a really good pot pie. For those worried about calories and fat etc., you might want to only use recipes from TOH's Healthy Cooking magazine.

We love this recipe. My only changes are a bit more flour and I use frozen mixed vegetables in place of the peas.

This is the worst recipe I have made from TOH! The dumplings were like dense heavy biscuits and the casserole was way too saucy. I threw out the leftovers! I'm an experienced cook so I don't think it was anything I did. I followed the recipe except added more celery and onion than called for. So many great reviews??

My Grandmother gave me all of her old Taste of Home magazines and this one was in a magazine from 1993 or so. I had everything on hand, it was easy enough to make and my 2 and 4 year old ate it with no complaints. I will be keeping this recipe!

The flavor of this casserole was definitely wonderful, and the consistency came out perfect. I had always had the traditional Chicken and Dumplings made on the stove top in a stock pot - but this was an interesting twist. Really yummy.

This is one of my family's favorite dishes now. Whenever we have roasted chicken I make sure to put this in the menu to use up the left over chicken. I also use mixed vegetables to add color & give variety in flavor. However, I don't make this biscuit recipe. I make my grandmother's recipe and drop the homemade dough on top. So Yummy!

This recipe was pretty simple to make and had wonderful flavor! Not too much but definitely not too bland. One thing I might do differently next time is use mixed frozen vegetables to add some color and extra different flavor for my kids!

Hello! I'd like to comment that I made this dish for my husband and myself (we're empty nesters so cut recipe in half, except for dumplings) and it was just the right amount for us. My husband has a hearty appetite (he's a dairy farmer) and he especially enjoyed the dumplings. Very easy to make; this is a definite keeper!! Thank you for sharing your recipe.Sincerely,

Good recipe! This is something that really sticks to your gullet. After my husband ate his share, he announced that his new name was "Professor Leadbelly," but he loved it. I halved all ingredients and baked in an 8" square Pyrex dish, which worked out fine (two skinless boneless chicken breast halves, cooked earlier in the day, then cooled and cubed, yielded plenty of meat for this dish plus a little extra for my spoiled tortie kitty). Also cut back a little on the amount of frozen peas and substituted diced fresh carrots, as suggested in a previous review. However, I had a problem with the dumplings. They didn't bake up nearly as large as the ones pictured. In fact, they were downright chintzy. The Bisquick I used was from a brand-new box. Next time I make this I will use the full two cups of Bisquick, two teaspoons of basil and 2/3 cup milk and will make six or eight nice large dumplings.
